My dh cycles and I'm going to start cycling with him, I really need to get some shorts first. Any suggestions. Thanks!

I may not be qualified to offer advice on women's shorts, but, personally, I've never had any issues with Canari. Reasonably priced, good padding, and hold up pretty well.

    For standard sizes:

If you are comfortable in spandex--you can't go wrong with Pearl Izumi Quest. They're longer--11" inseam--and right at the sweet spot of price and comfort. (Superfancy bike shorts run up into the $100s!) I've tried a couple other brands and really prefer the PI, although your mileage might vary.

Longer is nice both for wind blocking against your thighs and so your legs aren't chafing against the seat. PI also makes a Sugar bike short that has a shorter inseam if you'd prefer that tan line. :)

If you are more comfortable in baggy shorts but still with padding--mountain bike shorts--I like Dakine's stock (sorry, I don't remember which one in particular), although I've also used the Pearl Izumi Canyon before.

My friend who wears plus sizes swears by Aerotech Designs bike gear. I've never worn that brand, but I am SORELY tempted by these.

I like Terry Bicycles' Liberty short. Padded, but not excessively; longer length; looser fit in the legs, but not baggy. They're comfortable on both my road bike and my recumbent.

Try out teamestrogen.com - they have lots of good info on the sizing and will give a discount on shipping if you have to return items. I like Canari because they were the first ones I could find to fit but I'm much more plus size than you. They do have sizing charts on all their clothes that are manufacturer specific so you can use your measurements to get a better idea of what will fit.

There's a size chart on the web site. I usually wear a size 12, and Terry's size L shorts fit me. You're a little taller and several pounds lighter than me, so M would probably work for you.

For most companies, a Medium should be fine.

    I'm 5'7", 154#, and a 4/6.
    But beware with Pearl izumi.
I got a pair of shorts in medium and they fit great.
I got a pair of capris in medium and I can't pull them past my knees.

Sierra Trading Post has a *kitten* ton of cycling stuff at great prices.
But if you want something ASAP, best to go to a store.
