best, healthiest cut at an affordable price

I usually just buy what looks best but to be honest have no idea

I think that is a sensible approach, I do that too. As long as the meat is fresh, it's going to be healthy.

I agree, eyeballing it is not a bad approach. Assuming my healthiest you mean fat content, it's pretty easy to see how marbled a steak is. My guess is that sirloin will usually be the most affordable lean steak.

For steak I often go with a sirloin. It is usually not the cheapest but not the most expensive either and relatively lean with decent flavor. My favorite cut is a NY Strip...I also like a good rib eye on occasion, but I'd personally rather have prime rib if I'm going that route.

I also use top round quite a bit (London Broil) and it's very cheap...it's a tougher cut and it's one huge steak so you serve it in thinly sliced pieces. It requires a good bit of marinating time as well and should be cooked medium rare to medium at the most or you're going to basically have shoe leather.

I like ribeyes, and while they're not the cheapest they're not horribly priced either. Usually the cheapest cuts are the tougher cuts best cooked slowly, which isn't really what you want when you're craving steak. The other day I was pleasantly surprised by the nutritional profile of porterhouse steaks, too -- not even fat-free, lean-only ones, but the real thing with good marbling! They can be pricey, but snag them when you find them on sale.

I have recently discovered "flat iron" steaks. Kinda shaped like a flank steak but thinner. Myngrocery store puts them on sale for $6.99 a pound pretty regularly.
They're great for steak fajitas. Cook it hot and fast on my cast iron grill pan to rare/medium rare, slice thin across the grain, yummy!

Ahhh, come on guys, ya can't go cheap on a steak. I like a high fat rib eye. Very satiating and not bad on calories. Fats not bad in balance.

This guy ... this guy knows what's up.

If you're going to cook a steak you may as well cook a good one, right?

Ribeye steaks or NY Strip steaks are typically prevalent on your grocer's shelves and they're great cuts. If you find them on sell you can get them for $7.99/lb which, really, isn't that bad. Get one with some nice marbling and maybe a few chunks of fat and it's all worth it. And as far as picking out a cut goes ... just eyeball it. If you know what you're looking for that's easy enough to say but, if not, go online somewhere; there's got to be someone who gives a pretty good description of what makes a chunk of meat good.

Honestly those are my favorite cuts, though a T-bone isn't bad.

I love a good fatty rib-eye and at times I prefer a thick, med-rare, melt-in-my-mouth filet mignon. Depends on my cravings, but damn a perfectly seared chunk of fat on the edge of the rib-eye gets me right in the belly feels everytime. NY Strip steaks & sirloins will never make my list.

depends on the occasion and how many mouths you're trying to feed. My family eats beef quite a bit and I really can't afford to feed everyone a rib eye every time. If it's just my wife and I and more of an occasion, that's a different story.

I can't justify $15.99/Lb to feed my family on a regular basis.

If you're willing to cook it for a long time (low and slow), a chuck steak will be tender. It has quite a bit of fat on it and it's cheap.

I buy the whole rib eye at Costco and cut the steaks myself. Winds up being about $5.99/lb for a lot of good steak.
