My take on "starvation" diets

First let me say I am in no way promoting starvation diets. And though this post may be deleted anyways, I want to state my opinion on the weight loss method.
My diet consists of 500-600 calories a day. I am Paleo so foods I eat almost exclusively consist of vegetables, fruits, nuts, sardines, and eggs. In doing this I have lost 20 pounds in 20 days. Before you bash this diet you should know this is only a temporary diet, which I will only do until I reach my ideal weight of 150 pounds. This goal is only 34 pounds away and will be attained by the end of June. And yes I know how you all feel about starvation diets. And I do agree they are unhealthy. But realize the fact that being obese or overweight is equally unhealthy. Also realize the real negative affects from starvation happens from long term and on going abuse of the diet, i.e. anorexia that carries on for years. Doing this diet for a mere 2 months will cause more good than harm as it will get me out of being overweight and will end as soon as I reach my healthy target weight.

Enjoy your lack of muscle mass.0

you are losing muscle mass. It won't cause more good than harm.
Getting to a healthy weight without starvation is the best way to do it.
As soon as you hit your healthy weight what then?
I've lost 55lbs in 18months...my health is great, blood pressure is good, cholesterol is down, iron levels are normal, thyroid is great and B levels are good, and I didn't lose muscle mass doing it. Remember your heart is a muscle.
What about vitamins? minerals you are missing....
Are you under a doctors supervision? When you dramatically reduce your calorie intake, you will lose weight. But it can also cause all kinds of health problems, including muscle loss. Further, when you start fasting, your body goes into conservation mode, burning calories more slowly.
Keep in mind that the initial weight lost on a fast is primarily fluid or "water weight," not fat. And when you go back to eating, any lost weight usually gets a return ticket back. Not only do most people regain weight lost on a fast, they tend to add a few extra pounds because a slower metabolism makes it easier to gain weight. Worse, the weight that is regained is likely to be all fat -- lost muscle has to be added back at the gym.

lol
"being overweight and starving yourself are both unhealthy, so you should starve yourself, but only for a little while."
solid logic brah0 -
That's doesn't seem enough to keep your organs properly functioning, forget muscles.0

You realize that by starving yourself, you're sacrificing a great deal of muscle in going quickly. Muscles like your heart, not just your legs and arms. You realize your metabolic rate lowers as you get smaller but even more so by having less muscle (which you are likely sacrificing a great deal at the speed you're going).
You know it's unhealthy but you're so hell bent on a scale number that you'll do anything to achieve it. Even sacrifice your own health. Yes, you are doing this. Whether you'll admit it or not, the way you speak of what you're doing IS disordered and misguided. I truly hope you rethink your plan quickly. Muscle is NOT easily rebuilt and a scale number is not the cure all to happiness.0 -
500-600 calories means your losing more muscle than you need to, it will affect your health and you will just as quickly gain it all back after your severe dietary restrictions end-but good luck with that.0

Actually my face and waist are visibly slimmer so obviously I am losing fat. I can gain whatever muscle I lose with the fat after June. No problemo.0 -

If he's doing all his cals as protein, he may not lose much more than he would have using a slower approach.
But that's a pretty big "if"....0 -

You lose water, fat, and muscle when you lose weight. The faster you go, the more muscle is lost. And muscle is not easily regained. It takes a lot of time and effort to build muscle.0 -
You do realize that an extremely low-calorie diet is only recommended by doctors for people that are morbidly obese and truly are doing more harm than good being so heavy? And they're usually closely monitored to ensure they're getting the nutrition they need.
Assuming you keep this going, you'll probably look terrible and be squishy everywhere. Your maintenance will be lower because your body chewed through muscle for fuel (sure hope it leaves your heart alone).
I'd wish you good luck but I wouldn't mean it.
This is a terrible idea.

The mainstream? How long have you been here? I've seen more snake oil starvation diet peddlers than I could fit in a celebrity pool here all claiming you'll lose zero Muscle as long as you do "xyz" . They're all peddling magic. MFP is the only place I've seen sensible people take a no *kitten* approach to weight loss0 -
