Tips for a Fitness/Wellness Career

I struggled with deciding if I should post this in Fitness and Exercise or Motivation, but anyway I settled on Fitness and Exercise. To sum up the last two years briefly, getting fit and losing weight has changed my life. I have done a handful of half marathons and two full marathons along with falling in love with working out, eating right, and being well overall. Long-term, I dream of making fitness and overall wellness my career. I have started blogging and picking up followers there. I don't want to be strictly a trainer but an overall motivator. However, somewhere in there, it seems that some type of fitness certification or instruction is necessary. Though a lofty goal, I aspire to be like Chris and Heidi Powell from Extreme Weight Loss or the trainers from The Biggest Loser who have a hand in big transformations both in and out of the gym.

Why type of fitness education or steps have those of you who do have a fitness career taken that have been beneficial? I'm not looking to quit my day job next week but I do want to intentionally grow my blog and find some way to say teach a workout class a night or two a week and see where I grow from there.

Kinesiology, physiology, and a basic nutrition class should be staples. In today's society, you HAVE to know what you're talking about and not just echo a lot of "old" myths that still circulate in the fitness industry.

It's tough and it's something you better truly love. Many places will want a BS in-addition to a legitimate certification. Like Niner said, Kiniesiology, Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, are all great subjects. I just finished my MS in Exercise Science actually and have started a new career search, see what happens. Good luck and get ready to read a ton of research. I think in the 18-months of my MS program I read 400+ peer-reviewed studies. :o
