Seriously? 3 lbs??

I know you aren't supposed to weigh yourself every day... but I do. Every day the scale goes down too. Except today. From yesterday morning to this morning it said I gained 3 lbs. Seems like a lot to me! How does this happen??

Well there's water weight, too much sodium and hormones from ur monthly visitor. It's normal to fluctuate 5+ during that time.
  • Thats nothing. Lots of factors affect minor fluctuations in weight.

You also said you know not to jump on the scale a lot. So stop. Unless you want to keep freaking out, its going to do you no good.

I've gained 4-5 pounds after lunch before.

Who knows, maybe you didn't poop (sorry for crassness, but it's a real factor) before that weigh-in. Water retention, keys in your pocket, any number of things. I view these fluctuations as mere noise.

It happened to me to, the culprit was smoked salmon and pitta bread. I did not realize that pitta bread had over 400 grams of sodium. I have decided to leave those out of my eating until I reach my goal weight.

If you weigh every day, you'll get a decent picture of weight fluctuations. If that causes distress and/or you like mystery, don't weigh every day.

But at least try to weigh at the same time, wearing the same clothes.

Water. I did the same thing over the weekend. I flushed my system on Monday (ran, ate lightly, and drank a ton of water) and the three pounds was gone the following day.

step away from the scale and shame on you (slaps wrist) you know weight gain didnt happen over night and wont disappear in one day.

Once a week, same time, calibrated, preferably naked, and no intense exercise or heavy meals the night before.

Totally normal fluctuation. You can weigh yourself everyday if you want but you have to be able to deal with typical ups and downs.
  • I've noticed that I add water weight during hay fever/allergy season which just started in my neck of the woods

    Sooooo many reasons!
    water weight
    food in your stomach
    different clothes
are you close to your period?
the wind is blowing from a different direction
    the Gods aren't smiling today

Seriously, your weight will fluctuate from day to day, no matter what you do or don't do. If this bothers you, do NOT weigh every day! Google and read "Why the Scale Lies" and it will explain some of the normal variations. Weight loss is not linear and no matter what your efforts are, you can't force it to be. I weigh every day just so I can see what my normal variations are. My weight graph looks like a roller coaster and I can *easily* fluctuate 5 pounds up or down from day to day! However, the overall trend is down. THAT is what you should be concerned with, NOT the day to day fluctuations. For the most accurate test of your weight loss, compare today's weight with what it was 4 weeks ago.

If the scale has been going down everyday except for today then you should be thrilled. It's just water weight.

This. Alternately, DO weigh yourself every day, and you'll start to notice patterns in the fluid retention.

For me, I weigh more if I eat a lot of sodium (oh, sushi bar, I do love you, even though you don't love me), if I have PMS, or if I'm particularly sore from exercise. I've gone up as much as 8 pounds in a day. That was after a delicious bowl of shrimp pesto alfredo with garlic bread, and after my brother's luau. But since I know I didn't eat the required 28,000 extra calories I'd need to gain 8 pounds, I laughed it off, and watched it fade away over the next few days.

What everyone else said about water.

And if you must weigh everyday, use a site like http://trendweight.com and focus on the trend instead of the daily weight. So long as it continues going down, worry not.

On Sunday I ran 25km and the next day I was up 3lbs. It happens.

As long as you're being honest with yourself, just remind yourself that the gain is temporary and normal. It's part of the process. (I'm down nearly 4lbs from 48 hours ago). Just keep going!

I am in the daily weight camp and have been since I started
Jan.11.........you WILL have daily changes and they won't all be down, trust me, really, it won't always go down; but knowledge is power and you will learn from watching your monthly cycle and sodium intake in conjunction with these scale numbers. Don't panic over one number on one day; look at the numbers over a week or, even better, a month. Best of luck; hang in there.
