Protein supplements for weight loss

Hey guys,

I've lost about 10kgs so far but with 14 to go I am looking at getting really serious about this. I have been thinking about using protein/whey powder either every day or at least post work out. I really don't know a lot about it but was hoping people could advicse the best general direction or specfici brand to go with. Goal being to build lean muscle and weight loss, not looking to bulk up.

Was advised in store towards Ripped Freak? Have also had Gold Standard Whey recommended.

Cheers!

1g protein per pound of lean body mass. You can get your protein through food and/or shakes.

I am totally agree with you and wants to appreciate you for this kindness. I think that supplements are not really good for human health. At this time it's effect on body but with the passage of time it's show his side effects. And that was not really good. So always avoid to eat supplements. Used natural foods.

What is this based on? Protein supplements have been around for decades.

Protein alone won't make to bulk up. A calorie surplus + training for hypertrophy + adequate nutrition to build muscle will make you bulk up.

Also just to be clear, quantity of protein alone also won't change weight loss. The role protein that plays while you lose weight is, when you train hard (in order to signal to your body to hold onto your lean body mass because you still need it, thereby encouraging the body to catabolise your fat for fuel instead), you need sufficient protein to nourish and repair those muscles that you are aiming to keep around. So amount of protein helps achieve desired body composition WHEN combined with the strength training (i.e. just meeting your body's general protein demands based on activity).

Now, myself, I have chosen whey protein products that contain the least number of artificial ingredients (artificial sweeteners, articial flavourings) just because a) I prefer not to ingest artificial ingredients unnecessarily, b) I don't need that to enjoy drinking my whey. Right now I am using unflavoured whey from Bulk Powders (though you can find it from several brands). For even more natural, there is hemp protein (though that is difficult to just mix with water and drink for the same quantity of protein).

ETA: I have tried the ON Gold Standard 100% Whey Vanilla Ice Cream, which was really quite yummy, but unnecessarily sweet like many whey products. I don't know why they do that. Scitec 100% Whey was even sweeter.

In any case, look for something that is almost exclusively protein in content. I.e. 24-25g protein per scoop. Any less and there is something fishy about what is going into it.

ETAA: As for frequency, it's all a question of getting sufficient protein everyday. So if every other day, you don't have enough protein (for whatever reason your diet has such a pattern), take it every other day. If you need more protein everyday, take it everyday. If you eat a load of turkey one day and got your protein goal, you don't necessary need extra whey. Excess protein is processed by your kidneys and is then excreted through urine. In general, I think if you stay in the range of 1g/lb of body weight, you can't go too too wrong. However, if you go "whey" (heh) overboard and your kidneys cannot cope, you need to keep an eye out for cloudy pee, etc. to make sure you don't do any damage.

    Ummm what?

Supplements are called that because it is supplementing what you're not getting from your normal diet. Sure you can get nutrients from diet alone but not everything your body needs.

I would add the "not always", because when you are not restricting yourself to a calorie deficit and are able to plan your meals to include all the components, it is very likely possible to get pretty much everything from diet alone.

The motivation for protein supplements is getting enough protein into your total available calories. If you're on a cut, that can severely limit how much, say, chicken you can squeeze into a day while getting enough variety in the rest of what you eat to fulfill all the other important nutrients. Protein supplements are just a calorie-efficient delivery system to get a high concentration of protein with little of the other macros coming along for the ride.

Calorie deficit to lose weight. You only need to supplement protein if you lack it in your diet. Food should be the number one source.
