To lose weight you need to burn more than you eat. But you burn a large number of calories by just being alive.

You already burn plenty just by going about your day. Eat what MFP tells you (the deficit has already been accounted for), and then eat a bit of what you burn through exercise.

Yes, burn more than you eat, but don't think that means that if you're eating 1200 a day you have to burn more than 1200 through exercise. As others have said, you burn calories just by being alive. If you eat less than what you burn through living, you can lose weight with no extra exercise at all.

You have to burn more than you eat. There really isn't anything more to learn. It's that damn simple.

Yes, but this doesn't mean you need to do a massive amount of exercise.

MFP gives you a calorie goal based on the following information (among other things in your profile):

    -Height
    -Activity level
    -Gender
    -Desired weight loss per week

From there it will estimate how many calories you burn just by existing in your day-to-day life. Then, it subtracts an amount to determine how many fewer you need to eat in order to lose weight. The amount it subtracts is based on what you set as desired weight loss per week.

If you wish, you can do some exercise, log the activity in MFP, and eat back a portion of the calories (many recommend 50%-75%). You do not HAVE to exercise!

Make sure you meet your calorie goal. If you exercise & are hungry, eat back some of the calories. Pick an amount and stick with it, though, for 4 weeks and see how much weight you lose. If you're on track, keep doing what you're doing. If not, adjust as needed!

Read the links @Emilia777 posted, they're full of good information! I read the sexypants link almost once a week every week.
