I know exercise is a must, both cardio and stregth training. My question(s); cardio 1 day strength training the next? Or cardio and strength training all in the same day then rest the following day?

There are different ways of doing it, but a popular routine that works well is full-body strength every 2-3 days, with cardio on non-strength days, plus a day of rest per week. You can tag on a short cardio session after strength if you feel up to it.
For strength training, it's best to follow a pro-designed program, instead of doing your own thing. Good programs include NROLFW and Stronglifts. Those require some equipment. There are programs without equipment too like Nerd Fitness, but you get a bit more out of it with weights.
