it seems every time I leave the house, any friend that invites me out, any function.. Party.. Get together , it is always centered around food. And never healthy. Been trying for a long time to diet and stick with it. Do I need to be a hermit?

I sympathise, but my advice would be "Yes, be a hermit". Until you develop the willpower to make the right choices when you ARE out that is.

I have kidded myself before into thinking that friends and family will help. They mean well, but developing a healthier eating habit is hard and those who don't feel the need to do it will quickly forget that you do and they'll offer that extra glass of wine, handful of nuts etc. This is often because they simply don't understand how significant these small extras can be to your goals.

The good news is that I don't think it takes THAT long for willpower to get pretty strong. Maybe 2-4 weeks (some less, others more). So, yes, my advice is to be a hermit for the time it takes. THEN, do go out and take a smaller serving, refuse that extra glass of wine, or eat prior and mingle more (visit the buffet less).

Your friends may be great, but only YOU can do this successfully (I believe).

In the meantime, while playing "hermit", make sure you socialise with all your MFP buddies to keep your spirits up!!

    Good Luck!

I would NOT be a hermit. The rest of the world doesn't stop turning when we change a habit. PLANNING is key, eating within your goals before going is a good idea, allowing room for "just a taste " at events. We are meant to be social creatures we do not have to hide from what makes us uncomfortable, facing it builds character.

Eat before you go. I don't know about you, but my willpower can rarely win out over hunger. Good luck, and enjoy your friends' company!

^^^THIS. Fill up on healthy food before you go! Then if people bug you, say that you just had a pizza.

I agree with this. Food and social events will always be there. That will never change. Accept it and plan accordingly. The biggest thing I learned was just because food is offered or available doesn't mean I need to eat it. I'm an adult. I plan my meals, I decide what I eat and when I eat. A polite, "No, thank you" will suffice. Or, if you are hungry eat what you want in moderation. Every event will have different circumstances so just try to be prepared.
