Hi everyone I need help with staying motivated to exercise! I love to walk or hike, but can not seem to get motivated. Its like laziness has taken over my personality! As soon as I'm off work I just plop my butt on the couch. What kind of things do some of you do to stay motivated to Move? I'm 43 and I feel like if I don't do something now I never will

Have you tried exercising in the morning before work? When we started our journey we tried to do it after work and we just found it to easy to let life get in the way. We would get home and then it was time to get kids fed and homework done so it seemed the workouts always got pushed back. We forced ourselves to go to bed a little earlier and get up an hour earlier so we could workout.0

That's a great idea, no I have not tried it in the morning. 12 yr ago I accepted a GM position and that's where it all went down hill, I stay mentally stressed so after work I have a defeat attitude. So this may work for me!
Thank you stevesample76 , I never even considered it...bong

LOL. I've seen his responses on the message boards before. I don't think he's being hateful or confrontational, he's just very "to the point". You'll find a lot of people like that on these boards. These types of people are the ones you want to listen to, because typically they have the best advice and know what they are talking about.
I also suggest working out in the morning. That's the only time of the day that I know I will have time to do, and it's the only time I know I won't be interrupted.

TBF he makes a valid point, that you cant love it that much otherwise youd be doing it. You are being rather defensove to put it mildly. Motivation comes from you, nobody else can do whats needed for you and so that requires you to have to want it enough to do something about it. The fact you arent would indicaye you dont want to get to wherever it is more than you want to sit on the couch. Bit hateful or confrontational thats just a fact. You yourself admit you are lazy, so perhaps you should have a rethink if you wnat a mmore successful stragey.
Are you trying to lose weight or just get fit? You dont say.
When you want it badly enough then you will do something about it.
I'm quizzical how you just mention exercise. If you are after weight loss, then focus on deficit delivery and worry less about exercise, its less importnat for straight weight loss, although it has a lot of benefits.
If you want to exercise more just start small and build, keep adding time or distance if you are going to use walking as a starter.0 -

He is being correct. You just can't handle the truth of it.
I weight train. Love it when I first started 10 years ago. Loved it through hurting myself while weight training.

I'm a post-work plopper too! I dread the 2-3 minutes before I start "treadmilling" (which I see is not actually a word) but... once the earbuds go in and the music gets cranked, I'm always good to go. Maybe you're experiencing the same anxiety (and I use that word loosely) as me. If, somehow, you can just push through that excruciating pre-walk (or hike) routine you might be good to go!?
And as stevesample76 suggested, mornings work great for some... not for "me" but worth a go.0 -
OK first off, I didn't say anything about losing weight I asked what suggestions did anyone have for staying motivated in exercising. And I do walk a lot and hike, just got back from North Carolina vacation and I hiked, do I love it as a full time job? No. But I try. So to say I must not because I'm lazy is silly! I call my self lazy...yes! I work a full time job and have kids and such. All I was asking was for tips to stay motivated. Sorry but I do feel attacked here so obviously this is not for me. Thanks to those who sent me some pm of encouragement instead of slamming me0

Well considering most people coming here are looking to lose weight then it was a reasonable question to ask on a calorie counting website. Pardon me for attempting to be helpful. For goodness sake you called yourself lazy and then start with all the hateful nonsense when we merely repeated what you had told everyone. If you want to exercise then you find enough moivation to do some and then believe it or not you just do it, even if its starting off on 5 minutes a day and building on that. Everyone starts somewhere. Find soemthing you like to do because that will seem less like exercise maybe not the hiking though.
Oh and for the record you shouldnt let it put you off using the forums, which are pretty mild compared to most others.0
