Dietary confusion!

I keep seeing so much conflicting information regarding diet that I'm not sure where to start when trying to plan my meals.
For example, there are a lot of people who say that no dairy is the way to go, but then other posts say to go for some Greek yogurt !! Then I read that vegan has improved people's health and the next article advocates for a keto high fat low carb way of eating.
Ahhhhh- help!!

To lose weight, you just need a calorie deficit.

A calorie deficit is all that is required for weight loss. How you get there is largely a personal decision and should be one that you can stick to for life. There are people who have been successful eliminating tons of things from their diet and there are people who have been successful eating whatever they want, but keeping their portions in tact and then everything in between.

The only thing that HAS to happen for you to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit.

Some people are lactose intollerant so no dairy works for them. Others don't get enough protein and find greek yogurt a good way to supplement. Vegan diets can be as healthy or unhealthy as you make them.

If you have any medical conditions that require specialized diets then you should follow the specialized diet, otherwise balance is what you should be looking for. Balanced macro nutrients, balanced micronutrients, balanced for satiety and pleasure and nutrition, balanced calories between keeping a deficit and not starving yourself.

All the rest is just personal preference. You'll feel better eating what is right for you, not someone else.

    Losing weight = calorie deficit
Don't worry about fad diets or eliminating certain foods (unless you need to for medical reasons). Just keep it simple.
    • Set up your MFP profile with your desired rate of loss
    • Eat that calorie goal when you don't workout
    • When you do workout eat 50-75% of the exercise burn back (adjusting up or down based on actual loss...also note that MFP is designed for you to do this. The goal it gives you is so that you lose weight without exercise)
    • I highly recommend weighing your food with a food scale and using measuring cups only for liquids.

For two weeks, log into the diary the same foods that you have been eating but with smaller portions. :) After two weeks, you can evaluate and make some adjustments (more of this food, add a new food, cut out another food for now).

For weight loss, all that matters is calories. For health (barring a specific medical condition) eating balanced is all that really matters. Just use common sense and personal preferences.

Lean meats (unless you don't eat meat), whole grains, some beans and legumes if you like em, lots of leafy veggies, lots of colorful produce (as many colors as possible!), eggs and dairy based on preference, nuts, and, of course, pizza. And cookies, and pretzels and chips and ice cream.

Eat a nutrient-rich diet and fill in the rest of your calories with all the "junk food". It's truly that simple. There's no magic, there's no secret food making you fat. Eat all the things!!! .... In moderation :-)

Eat the foods you like that fit your calorie goal and YOUR goals. Don't worry about what's on everyone else's plate.
