Energy boosting foods

What do you eat when you're feeling sluggish? What do you find helps sustain your energy levels throughout the day? Wether it be a snack or a meal, I need some help & ideas. Some days I'm so totally drained by 5pm that I don't want to do anything more than go home and sit down until its time to go to bed. Also my job doesn't have a refrigerator or a microwave so I'm looking for something room temperature. Thanks in advance

I believe that the general rule of thumb is that things that are harder to digest (i.e. proteins) provide energy for longer periods of time. Raw almonds tend to help me... but honestly, so does a crap ton of coffee ;-)0

I always keep a protein bar and a baggie of trail mix in my purse to snack on at work. They chase away the 3pm blahs for me.
Opening your diary might help you get more specific advice (but I totally understand if you don't want to) but also make sure you're not under-eating and getting plenty of proteins, fats, and fibers. I find that I tend to crash at work if I have a carb heavy lunch.0 -

If it's ENERGY, then it's gonna be carbs.

Protein bars (I like Quest bars) ... I'd say a smoothie w/ maca root but you don't have a fridge :grumble:0 -

I like smoothies with maca root but I have to make tiny little ones and drink them early because I cant keep them cool so they gross pretty quick. My office is lame!0 -
Oh derp, I just checked my diary settings. :ohwell:0

I think that nuts and stuff like that are good mix of protein and carbs, but want to mention a couple other ideas.
I used to work at a Greek restaurant and would order a plate of Horta (boiled endives) that would give me a boost. Not sure if it was the iron or what, but it worked well. (I was borderline anemic at this point in my life.)
I don't think I have Celiac disease or anything, but I notice when I eat anything with a lot of white flour, I get EXTREMELY tired. Just totally wiped out. I can eat small amounts as a side dish without an issue, but when the main dish consists of this ingredient, I really have to fight to stay awake (Pancakes, pasta, bread, etc.).0 -

Simple carbs drag me down as well. I am actually gluten intolerant, so I avoid wheat, but even the GF substitutes made with rice flour etc for things like muffins, bread and pancakes leave me in a food coma.0
