can anyone help me to work out how many calories I need to burn per week in order to lose 1lb per week?

MFP does that for you..enter your stats and put your weekly weight loss goal at 1lb a week...bam calories required (without exercise) to lose 1lb a week.0

Height, weight, age and activity level will help people answer.
What do you do for exercise and how often?0 -
Height is 5ft, weight is 7.6 stone, age 38, started walking 4 times per week for around 50 mins.0

Personally, I would buy loose dumbbells, not a set. And I would get the plain, cheap hex shaped ones. They will last forever and you should be able to find them for $1 per pound or less. I wouldn't bother with the really light weights, but if you're just starting out, maybe start with a pair of 5, 7 or 8, and 10. If you have a used sporting goods store, check there first, or Craigslist. You can often find some really great deals.0

An accurate 3500, so 500 a day in either less consumption or exerccise.0

If that picture is you, and you want to lose 7 pounds. Its going to be nearly impossible to lose 1lbs/week. Maybe try for 1/2 pound. Really you would be better off looking into body recomp.0
-
That pic is what I used to look like 2 years ago and how I want to look again after I've lost about 7lbs. I don't weigh a lot but I am flabby!0
-
I've just done a week on 1200 calories per day and exercised 4 times during the week and there's no change on the scales0
-
As said above MFP works it out for you. A week isnt long enough for, try being patient. Check your deficit if need be. The less you have to lose the harder it becomes.0

why 1200? did you choose that or did you put in 2lbs a week?
Try 1/2lb a week and 1 week isn't enough0 -
Mfp worked it out that I should have 1260 calories per day. Ok sounds like I'm doing the right things to get to my goal, just wanted to check! Thanks guys.0

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you're too short and too light to try to lose a pound a week. Move your desired weight loss to a half pound a week. It's unnecessary to overly restrict yourself to lose at a higher rate when you're in the lower half of your healthy weight range.
A week isn't really enough time to judge the scales. Our weight fluctuates far too much to judge by a week.0 -

I second both of these statements. Seven pounds isn't going to come off quickly at your weight unless you do it in an extremely unhealthy way, and then it's not likely to stick. If you want to get rid of the "flab", look at body recomposition.

Agree and I'm glad someone said it.

It's not bad news don't worry, I just need to know the best thing to do as I've never dieted or counted calories before0

I found the best thing is to set a reasonable goal...with a reasonable deficit. Meaning you didn't gain 1lb a week so losing it doesn't seem reasonable.
Log accurately and consistently (using a food scale if it helps, choosing correct entries) everyday. Prelog if that helps.
Ensure you are not over restricting...giving up the food you love to "diet"...ensure you fit those in daily if you want...I do and have no issue losing.
Exercise if you want but make sure you eat some of those calories back to fuel your next workout...it won't stop weight loss....eating them back...it can help....
don't expect weight loss every week...sometimes you don't..it isn't linear...but trust in the process it works.

body recomp happens when you are doing some form of weight lifting (heavy/bodyweight/resistance training) eating close to maintenance and losing fat while you gain muscle.
I love how people throw that out...it's a long process and requires close attention to macros, your lifting and a lot of patience...0 -

Oh really can't see me doing that to be honest. Ive bought Dumbbells to start using at home but that's about it, I only want to do exercise I enjoy or I'll lose motivation. I'm sticking with power walking, bit of yoga and Dumbbells. Obviously if this doing end up making a difference after a little while I'll need to review it.0 -
*does not end up making a difference0

my sister doesn't lift weights to speak of either...she has small 5-10lb dumb bells she uses with Jillian Michael's videos...she is very lean...with visible muscle when she flexes...
No need to get into heavy lifting or anything...if you enjoy lunges, squats etc you would enjoy JM videos.0 -
Thanks that's something I'd definitely consider0

OP- I think the key here is how you describe yourself --"I don't weigh a lot but I am flabby!" So, if you don't weight a lot, why lose a 1lb a week?
I too, am 5' tall and at 106.4 lbs I looked great. I think you might focus on putting on muscle, and not losing weight per se. Especially, since you are not overweight, just need some firming. Losing 1lbs a week won't help that, In fact, if you don't feed your body with the proper nutrition you may end up weighing less and looking more 'flabby". You may even find you can go up to 112lbs, still wear the same clothes, and look even more terrific, than you already do!0 -
There's also fitness blender and body weight exercises. No need to go super heavy if you don't want to.0

Yes I love fitness blender and google "you are your own gym"...all good for tightening up.
Some form of resistance training is required tho for the results you want....and it will help with the yoga.0 -
I've definitely put on weight over the last 18 months it's very obvious on photos and in my clothes so this is why I want to lose 1lb per week, I just want to go back to how I was before, I say I don't weigh much as I don't think 106 pounds is a lot and people can't understand why you want to lose weight when they hear what I weigh. It's hard to carry a few extra pounds when your small in height and in frame. The areas I have gained are my thighs, my arms and I have muffin top BIG TIME!0

Looking into fitness blender, thanks0
