I thought once you got to lower end running paces you don't burn as much. And vice versa, once you get to the high end of walking paces you can burn more than lower end of running paces.0 -

They are more accurate for monitoring HR. HR is not directly related to calorie burned. There is a relationship that allows for estimation under certain circumstances. There are any number of factors that can affect accuracy.

I am after a monitor that responds well to changes in heart rate, which is why I am avoiding the wrist versions. I want to monitor my heart rate while pushing myself hiking so I slow down when I hit 100%.0

I looked at the Compendium a few weeks ago on this, the tipping point is something like 4.3 to 4.5mph. Running slower than that led to the MET value dropping quite fast, and above that the MET value of running ends up clearly larger quite quickly.

At walking paces HR is not a consistent indicator of effort.
Wrist monitors are increasingly accurate, but still not to the same standard as chest straps. The more important aspect is sampling rate and the algorithms used to determine what the HR trace means.
