Shoulder Pain

I've never had too much upper body strength, so I've been trying to work on that. I've been lifting light weights, only about 20lbs (I lift more at work on a fairly regular basis) and I have gradually worked my way up to doing push ups.

However, I've noticed that after working out, sometimes I will experience pains in my shoulder. It's always my left shoulder, and only occurs when I try to lift my arm over neck height. It's a sharp pain that just instantly makes me stop reaching for whatever it was I wanted.

Has anyone else had this type of problem before? What did you do for it, and do you know of the cause?

What exercises/program are you doing for upper body?

Good question, this. Also, have you tried foam rolling your shoulders? It helps me with tight muscles.

I'm no doctor but it could be overuse and the muscle is inflamed. Apply heat for 20 minutes. Take Aleve if you use pain relievers. Do this daily. Stay away from the weights for a while. Sometimes it takes a few days, a few weeks or a few months to heal.

A couple of sets of bicep curls + push ups, that's all. I try to do 20 modified push ups and 10-20 regular.

How is your form? I could see you maybe hurting your shoulder with pushups if you're not doing them right. Maybe not from curls though.

Shoulder hurts for me when I work chest/triceps probably just too much stress on them. Try stretching your arms and whatnot and see if that helps and if all else fails, just rest it for a while. Could be your form though. do it in front of a mirror and watch the motion.

I think it's decent. I definitely struggle during the last 3-5 though, on most days.

Well, try foam rolling. Be careful with static stretching, especially if you're not warmed up.

You shouldn't feel pain on any resistance exercise. You should deload or take a break from shoulder exercises until it's better. work on mobility exercises for your shoulder in the meantime. Good exercises are Shoulder Dislocations and Around the worlds.

This sounds a lot like the beginnings of shoulder impingement (http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00032) I would advise against any overhead lifts until you are pain free, and advise also some shoulder conditioning exercises found here (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/drryan9.htm) I have no specialty credentials & so if you can, consult a physical therapist - but I had a ton of shoulder issues due to unstable shoulders and have been in physical therapy twice to rehab injuries I could have avoided early on with proper conditioning.

Mine was a stress fracture. Ortho doc wanted to do a cortisone injection, but to be on the safe side because I was presenting much more pain than he would have expected, he sent me for an MRI. You might want to get checked out just to be sure. There is a definite difference between muscle soreness and pain. LISTEN to the pain, and take action from there.

I had shoulder pain that turned out to be a large calcium deposit. I was able to break it up with physical therapy and avoid surgery. If rest doesn't help, you'll want to get it checked out.

Unilateral sharp pain on movement ? Rest it, ice it, anti-inflammatories

Sharp pains should be evaluated by a medical professional.

That said, you might be going too deep on the pushups. Only go down until your elbows are at back level, not behind it.

Do you sleep on your left side more than your right?
