You should still have to tie and untie your shoe. The whole point is to make the loop around your heel so tight, your shoe will not move around on your feet at all.

If it's that tight, you should not be able to take your foot out of your shoe without undoing the knot.

Good way of lacing up a running shoe. First time I bought a pair of Inov8 fell shoes they were prelaced in that manner and I transferred it to all my other running shoes as it also helps to avoid laces undoing while out running - okay you could get around that with a double knot, but if you don't need to...

Easier solution is to buy shoes that fit........

My street running shoes do not have that extra hole. My trail running shoes do, but it doesn't go all the way through in the same place (like they cut the material before the inner and outer were joined, and the pieces do not match up quite right).

I agree with @BrianSharpe about buying shoes that fit. For years, I hesitated to buy shoes online for that very reason... shoes of the same size number are truly different dimensions. Then, for a few years, I found that I had bought the same size in all but 1 pair (that pair was 1/2 size smaller and was a bit tight, but the "normal" size was a bit too loose and I prefer tight over loose). So I figured the sizes had become standardized and I could buy based on that. My first pair of shoes purchased online was a few months ago... it was on clearance, so the price was appealing. But I can't return it. Since I figured sizes are now standard, I bought the size I normally buy in stores after trying them on. As it would turn out, sizes are NOT standardized. :( Lesson learned - that was the first and last time I ever buy shoes online.

I learned that during my last fitting, but have switched over to no tie laces since I tri. Besides properly fit shoes and laces, I also recommend good socks. Injinji toe socks are the best!

Shoes that fit perfectly can still slide around a bit on your foot. This tying method is simply to help lock the shoe down onto your foot to prevent any heel slippage, nothing more.

My Asics GT-3000s fit and fit better when I laced them like this.
I had to have special (ish) insoles in them that made them loose feeling on my heels, this helped a lot.

I laced my cross-trainers like this and really like the snug fit. I no longer have to tie them with a double knot. The laces are harder to loosen for removal, though.

I agree with this - I love these toe socks. That and body glide or similar products help a lot.

I just bled on my new running shoes yesterday. But this happens to me with basically any friggin' shoe I buy. Luckily, I have Furiosa as a running commentary in my head from here on into eternity/Valhalla:

Everything hurts out here. Now pick up what you can, and run.

For my Avon Walks, Injinji toe socks and vaseline, barely a blister after 40mi+ of walking

    If in doubt: lube.
