I bought some smoked salmon at Target today, the kind you just refrigerate and then can eat. I've heard conflicting information about smoked salmon..is it okay to eat?

What do you think would make it not ok to eat? I honestly can't think of anything negative health-wise about eating salmon.

I love smoked salmon, it's great on crackers with cottage cheese. Nothing wrong with smoked salmon!

From what I've heard, the only ''bad'' thing about smoked salmon, which is true for all smoked meats in general, is the high amount of sodium that is used, as it is a processed food. While you would be better eating fresh meat and cook it yourself most of the time, salmon still is fish and is high in omega-3s, smoked or not. Variety is important, so why not include both smoked and fresh meats in your diet, i doubt it could do you any harm!

I cold smoke my own salmon...is it also evil?

also, sodium is actually not the devil or anything...

Smoking your own salmon sounds amazing! Plus you have more control over what you put in it etc so it's less chemical than industrially-made ones.

Sodium isnt bad by itself, it's just that some people might be watching their intake as they might be consuming a lot of added salt at other times during the day, for medical reasons etc. A high sodium intake can cause water retention and bloating, to which some of us can be more sensitive to and it's not nice to see or feel (I've dealt with it for a long time along with digestion problems and it's no fun!) That's just it.
Bottomline is, if you enjoy it, smoked salmon every now and then is perfectly fine and pairs well with a lot of snacks, entries and meals while being a source of protein!

If it smells horribly, is turning green or is crawling with worms, no. Otherwise, I have no idea what you are talking about :)

From the sustainability perspective, some salmon fisheries are not good (although many are quite sustainable): http://www.seafoodwatch.org/seafood-recommendations/groups/salmon/overview?q=Salmon Probably many of the salmon from less healthy fisheries are less healthy to eat because they might be less healthy animals, but I don't know for sure if that's true.

Healthwise, smoked salmon is pretty healthy but quite salty. Probably plan on drinking an extra glass of water or two, and expect that the scale might go up for a couple days from water retention.

I have heard some bad things about smoked meats in general, which would include smoked salmon, regarding increased risk of cancer. But it's pretty vague and unsubstanstiated data. I'm not giving up my smoked salmon.

I like cedar plank grilled salmon best, but smoked salmon sounds delish.

I have it most mornings with my eggs and some baby spinach. Love the stuff! So good for you! Like someone rightly said above it does have high sodium levels which can cause issues with water retention but as long as it's in moderation it's absolutely class for you. Salmon on the whole is one of the best foods nature offers.

Mmm....smoked salmon....mmm....It's lean, low in calories, delicious, full of protein, so yummy in my tummy...It does have a higher fat content, but generally you're not going to eat more than a few ounces in one sitting so it's not that big of a deal.

I've never gotten sick from it; I love to eat in on a bagel with cream cheese (I'm addicted to nova lox). The only thing I don't like about it is its sodium content. For this reason, I don't gorge on the stuff every day (well, that and the price).
