Planks

I have been trying to add planks to my mild fitness regime with little success. After about 15 seconds my knee is causing me considerable pain and after 25 it collapses. My knee had been causing me difficulties when doing squats but better form and careful execution has eliminated the pain.
Will better form work with planks, as well? Or should I try something else to strengthen my core?
