Water Aerobics/Zumba After Knee Surgery

Hi all! My name is Christy, I introduced myself in the introduction board so I won't go over all that again. Just a quick rundown, I'm 30, overweight and almost 4 months post TTO (Tibial Tubular Osteotomy) on my right knee. SO when my BFF suggested water aerobics and water zumba I was like, "eh....really!? WHY NOT!?" This will be the final day of my first week. Monday and Wednesday are Water Aerobics and Tuesday is Water Zumba. It is so great on my knee! I can promise you - zumba or any of this other stuff on land would kill me still. I have a good year until I'll be back to my 100% (so says the doc.) It sounds silly to some I'm sure, but this is becoming life-changing. I can feel it. I'm excited to work out since I adore swimming, and my knee is not absolutely rebelling (only a bit!) SO: my point to all of this. Don't knock it until you try it, especially if you have injuries or are pre/post surgical status. And even if you're not limited, it's something fun to beat the heat that's coming on (except here in Michigan where it tries hard to go back to the fall. )
So, do any of you participate in these activities? If not you should check out your local HS and community pools.

I looooooove water zumba!!!!!! Unfortunately I was the youngest person there but maybe that's because I took the same class as my residents at my work (nursing home)
I can tell you that those guys kicked my butt! Gladdie who just celebrated her 92nd birthday moves like a ballerina in the water. It's beautiful to watch.
Get into guys! You'll absolutely love it! Plus nobody can see how unco I am under the water lol0 -
I like Zumba and I LOVE the water but... I'm afraid I won't get as much of a calorie burn from it.0

It's a mad workout cause you get the resistance from the water. I am puffed and red at the end of it. I'd be sweaty too but luckily the water helps cool me down and washes away the sweat0

Yes, I generally do a deep water workout. And when it fits my schedule, I do Aqua Zumba too. Love it.0

OP, if you love swimming, this has strengthened my core and my freestyle kick, which has helped my swimming too. Even when I can start running again, I won't be doing it as much as before. The water fitness is a better workout, and full body. Killer

I've had 7 foot and ankle surgeries since 2007 and so water aerobics is a blessing! It is the best over-all toning exercise ever and if you combine it with laps it is a fabulous, vigorous work-out. My only struggle with it is the chlorine ruined my hair (it's grown out and I chopped off the hay-like parts) until I learned to never let chlorine water touch dry hair, you've got to wet it with fresh water first and it helps to use an anti-chlorine spray speciality product as well, which I now use religiously. I also bought a highly rated swim cap through Amazon. My swim "kit" includes wax earplugs that mold to the ear canal shape (from Walgreen's called Max's) and webbed swim gloves from Amazon or Sports Authority that really help increase drag in the water and give your arms great tone, which I love, since I want Michelle Obama's gorgeous arms!0

The calories it burns for an hour, for me says about 1000. I'm like yes please! I'm so glad to see there are so many others out there who enjoy the sport! I'm actually about to get ready to go again tonight (the aerobics tonight.) I'm so pleased I have a way to work out without hurting my knee!!0

I'd recommend only going about half of whatever MFP estimates for your exercise. It notoriously overestimates.0
