I had a second degree AC joint separation. This was 15 years ago. I remember I needed rest. I used a sling. I think I was out for about 2weeks (this was in college, when I played basketball.)

I had a cycling accident in October of last year. sustain a grade 3 right shoulder separation. I was out of work for almost 3 months, and just started to get back on the bike this past month. I also started swimming this month.I did physical therapy for about 2 months after the accident for range of motion, stretching, and strengthening. I worked very slowly, glad I gave the shoulder time to heal.

Its been a process of needing a lot of patience but i work my training and my shoulder is healing , what I have learnt from all of this is I am unstoppable I have great focus and when negative things happened I didnt head for the nearest pizza joint and ice cream parlour to feel sorry for myself I re-evaluated and worked around it

What grade separation did you receive? It is fully recoverable without surgery, and unless you are a professional athlete it isn't really recommended. There is a good chance for the screws to pop loose and make matters worse. Feb of 2014 I experienced a grade 4 separation an the first month was the worse. I had full range of motion within a week and started light physical therapy. I admit I quit early and after 3 months was back in the gym and starting to do pull ups, push ups, overhead press, etc... This was a mistake as I got into things too quickly and because I never followed through with my physical therapy didn't fully develop the muscles around the shoulder to compensate for the lack of stability. So fast forward to now, I am back to where I was prior to separation. I have no troubles in the gym, no pain, but still have a lot of instability and popping. The only trouble I have is with dips. I cannot go deep as it feels like my clavicle is being pushed out of my shoulder. Other than that, everything else is just fine.

So the take away, maintain great posture and do the appropriate physical therapy. Also ease back into your workouts and before you know it you'll be right back to where you were! Oh and lastly, enjoy the bump on the shoulder (if you had a 3 or higher).

    Good luck!
