So im super new to this dieting thing. Depression caused me to stop eating completely at one stage but of course we know that doesnt work!
So in terms of losing weight, does anyone have any advice of what foods are best to eat and not eat?

Barring a medical condition, there are no good/bad foods. There are foods that fit into the nutritional goals which you have set for yourself depending on what you're trying to do, and foods that don't fit so well into those goals. This means that any food could be considered "bad" for your goals regardless of how "good" it actually is relative to the common perception of "good" food.
If you're looking to lose weight, all you need to do is eat at a caloric deficit meaning that you eat less calories than you burn daily by your body keeping itself alive added to the calories you burn with any extra activity.
The best suggestion I have is to make a rough outline of your goals, whether it is something like strictly weight loss, or getting stronger, or running a marathon, or anything else. Then work to reach the goal you've set for yourself.
As of now, there isn't much of a better answer that I could give simply because the question you've asked is not specific enough.0 -
Eat what you like; don't eat what you don't like, makes you ill, has gone bad, or puts you over your calorie goal. Focus on nutrition and hitting your macros (carbs/fat/proteins, specifically the latter two) and micros (other important nutrients), and add treats in moderation.0

You'd have to be more specific about what you hope to achieve.
As an example, alcohol makes my husband's depression worse so he doesn't drink. It's bad for him but I still enjoy wine a few times a week and it doesn't have any impact on my psychological health or weight loss.
What is good for someone else might be bad for you or vice versa.0 -
You've gotten some good advice.
In order of importance it's basically:
Calories/vitamins
protein
fat
fiber
carbs
***Also get a food scale!!!!
(So you have an accurate idea of how many calories you're eating)
Aim to get what mfp tells you. Look up macronutrients (protein/fat/carbs) and micronutrients (vitamins). Learn why each is important. Getting basic knowledge like that will put you ahead of all the fad diets.
