I don't understand calories..

I used to use this app a lot when I first lost weight. It helped a lot. I had my calories set to 1200 and would eat back the calories I burned off, completing my net calories at 1200-1300 a day.
Now I have people telling me about BMR, Calorie deficits (i know what they are but like, if youre eating what you shouls and exercising shouldnt you already have a deficit unless youre over eating to bulk?), and a bunch of other things I'm having a hard time understanding since I restarted trying to lose weight.
My trainer said eat 1588 calories. Is that net calories or just calories? Am I eating back calories I burn off since thats how much my body needs to function on the basic level? I'm just not really getting it anymore and I know my diet is the reason I'm not able to lose weight.

There is nothing to understand as it relates to "calories"... The only thing is that a calorie is a unit of energy.. secondly how many does it take your body to run on in a day and how much less of it do you need to loose weight..
It sounds like you need to read up on some of the MFP stickies to inform your self and educate so you can setup your MFP plan accordingly...
