Pinterest 100 calorie burn...how much does it really burn?

I am at work and we are really slow right now. I was on Pinterest looking up some activity that I could do for a bit to burn a few calories. Came across several similar pins saying you could burn a quick 100 calories for 40 jumping jacks, 30 crunches, 20 squats, and 10 push ups. I did it twice and it only took me 2-3 minutes each time. 100 calories seems like a lot for only 2-3 minutes. I don't have a heart rate monitor to see how much it really burns. I'm 5'6" and 186lbs. Anyone want to test it out and see how much it burns for them?

I'm 5'7" 223lb and I burn about 100 in 8 minutes of tabata--but that is really hardcore. Working so hard I'm at max heart rate, my breathing sounds like I'm dying, and I literally cannot do ANY more when it gets to the break. So I'd say it's very highly unlikely you'd burn that, being that much lighter, and working for a shorter period of time, even if you were at max heart rate.

Running 6mph at your weight would burn 15 calories in one minute of running. Jumping jacks at your weight burns around 10 calories per minute. Although the exercises you are doing are getting your heart rate up, they are not burning 100 calories unless you are doing them for over 10 minutes.

A heart rate monitor won't be any good for that kind of activity. And honestly, that's barely any calorie burn. You might get a few (5?) kcal out of the jumping jacks, but that's really about it.

If your job involves sitting at a desk (or really, just sitting), the best things you can do are simply get up and go for a five minute walk, or do some office yoga to stretch out your hips. It's not calorie burn, but scientifically, hip mobility is one of the biggest predictors of a longer and healthier life. Sitting for eight hours cancels out the cardiovascular benefits of a really significant amount of exercise.

Again, not calories, but health is about so much more. :)

And this is why one should only stay in the recipes and decorating sections of Pinterest.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in anything workout or nutrition-related on pinterest.

Thanks for the responses. I knew it wasn't accurate, just was wondering what it would be. I try to do as much walking away from my desk as possible.

Enjoy your days and thanks again :)

If it took 2-3 minutes? Let's say 15 calories.
