Tips for Business Trip?

Hi--I just restarted MFP recently after I fell off the wagon. I travel for work, and I know my biggest challenge is keeping myself in check when I am away from home.

For those of you who have traveled for business--what are some tips and tricks to keep yourself going and not get sucked in with the high calorie drinks at happy hour, potato skins, and just relying on whatever you can get from restaurants for dinner?

Do you also use the fitness facilities at the hotel you are staying at, or what do you do to make sure your activity level doesn't decrease while you are travelling?

Thanks in advance!

I always use the hotel fitness facility for business travel. Even if you're only working out for 30 minutes, it's better than nothing. So my first tip is, pack your workout clothes FIRST.

I don't usually travel with other people so I'm more in control of where I eat. You need to be disciplined and not succumb to pressure. If you should drink water and just have an appetizer sized meal with a salad, then do that. It's none of their business.

I always make time to use the fitness facilities (or, if I'm in a nice area and feel safe, run outside). Not only is it great for fitness, but working out regularly helps me sleep better (which can be a problem for me when I'm in a hotel room).

I stay disciplined with my food -- eating out isn't a special occasion when you're travelling for business. Unless it's a food that I genuinely can't get at home and is worth the splurge, I stay pretty basic when ordering. If I have a chance to help pick the restaurant, then I take advantage of it.

I avoid mindless eating (I am in lots of situations where there is a snack table piled with candy and other goodies -- I'll eat it when I choose, but I make sure to log it and that it's something that I really want).

If possible, I hit up a grocery story and get some snacks/simple meals that fit my goals. If your hotel has a breakfast bar, I have found that many hotels are willing to consider special requests from business travelers -- especially if you're on an extended trip. I once stayed at a hotel for three weeks and they stocked several things just for me since I was eating there each morning.

If I am visiting a supplier they usually take me out to a nice lunch or dinner- I use this as my "big" meal of the day and make the others things I would normally eat at home (salads, fruit, etc). Try to balance out those splurge meals.
