Does calories in/calories out apply to alcohol?

If I stay within my 1,500 calorie goal (with exercise) will drinking alcohol slow my weight loss progress? I know that when you drink the body metabolizes the alcohol first instead of the food you have consumed. But since I am staying within my calorie goal would it matter?

    If it has calories, CICO applies.

    Alcohol counts. Fruit counts. Everything counts.

    If you stay within 1500 calories, you'll have basically the same weight loss outcome whether some of those calories are alcohol or not.

    It matters, yes, but it depends on you personally. If drinking makes you eat mindlessly, then yes, it will slow you down. If you over do it and cannot workout as well the next day or feel poorly, then it is affecting your health, and that matters. If you have a drink or two occasionally and they fit into your calorie goal and you feel physically fine, then it should be okay.

    That is just my opinion, though, and it depends on your personal experience.

    I think it still works with cico. Any differences are probably water weight. Or inaccuracies in counting depending on what you are drinking. But just be careful to drink in moderation

    I've tried working it into my calories, but it was really hard to live on 1000 food calories and 500 wine calories (or thereabouts). Believe me, I tried HARD!

    If it's every now and then, it's fine. Though my weight would jump up for the next few days after drinking- just water weight.

    I think it would slow progress a little, depending on how much you're drinking, but some things are worth keeping in your life.

    "Here's the problem with all alcoholic beverages, and the reason I recommend refraining from alcohol consumption on the diet. Alcohol, whenever taken in, is the first fuel to burn. While that's going on, your body will not burn fat. This does not stop the weight loss, it simply postpones it, since the alcohol does not store as glycogen, and you immediately go back into ketosis/lipolysis after the alcohol is used up. "

    The alcohol calories matter to your overall intake, but alcohol does not store as fat. So your body is basically metabolizing something that won't be stored as fat anyway, instead of metabolizing the nutrients that will store as fat (carbs, protein, fat) thus hindering weight loss.

    Somehow I manage. I usually don't have an appetite after working out. My hunger is usually between lunch and the gym in the evening but I drink A LOT of water so that helps. And I don't binge eat after drinking.

    count everything..

    if you drink 500 calories of beer then that counts toward your calorie count.

    sounds like a bunch of woo woo to me...

    even if it temporarily stalled burning of other fat, if you are still in a deficit you are still going to burn the fat...

    She very clearly said "if I stay in my calorie goal".....no where did she suggest that she wasn't counting alcohol calories or going over her goal.

    As long as your stay in your calorie goal, you will lose weight regardless of where the calories come from.

    I balance my eating and drinking really well. And the foods I eat during the day are very healthy and satisfying. Alcohol seems like a better tradeoff because I'm stressed, it helps me sleep better, and in the evening I'm usually not up to cooking after working out. So it's between having a nice drink or eating boiled eggs, a shake, etc. to meet my calorie goal. Blah! But if I'm craving something really good (like avocado pasta, yum!) I will forego the drink in favor of the food.

    yea, I don't think you should be subbing alcohol for dinner or a post work out meal ...but that is just my .02..

    Let's just be completely honest here; if I could step away from the adult beverages for like 2 months...I'd be a skinny mini....lol!
    Alcohol anyway you sale it...it is going to slow down the average person. No one accurately measures their drinks and let's all be completely honest...one drink usually leads to 2 or 3...then you're celebrating your birthday for the 5th time this year.... ;)
    If you want to get serious...you have to stay serious. If you're going to accurately measure your alcohol and be strong enough to just have one ...then sure. But most people aren't that strong. (true honesty right there!)

    The atom bomb is 70 years old, does that mean it won't work any more ? Overfed alcohol you get the above, change to chocolate and you get this :-
