Constant need to clear throat after a meal, even small meals

Hey guys,
As I'm continuing my fitness adventure, I have a new question on my mind.
What is the cause and why do I have the need to clear my throat of mucus after I eat?
Like today I had some yogurt and Im finding myself coughing and clearing my throat very frequently. Another time I notice is when I eat dense meals like pasta or hamburgers with rice or mash potatoes. Almost like the action of filling myself up will cause me to get this really awkward cough.
Will this go away as I continue to lose weight?

Never had this when I was losing weight.
Probably best to see your doctor OP.0 -
When I saw my PCP a couple years ago he recommended just saying Musinex (spell check) and I did. It really didn't do anything though lol. I think he attested it to weight sorta also. I need a new PCP though...0

Relative of mine has an awful cough caused by an allergy to dairy. It's almost as bad as a smokers cough and quite annoying for them and me0

Acid reflux maybe? Definitely ask a doctor.0

It could be GERD. I have it and I get the cough at times. Sometimes my throat gets scratchy. I'd look into it to rule that out too.

I feel weird googling what GERD is on a work computer but to google I go!
All possible issues, Im just searching a home remedy or relief tooI will most certainly be going to a doctor about it soon. The dairy thing makes me think too.... Considering I just had yogurt (dairy) and its still sticking around.

I studied voice for 20 years, and there's a list of foods a mile long that can contribute to excess phlegm and acid reflux. Dairy, wheat, and caffeine are among the top offenders. Eating more slowly can help. Sipping peppermint tea. Eating smaller, more frequent meals. Give yourself some relaxation time after you eat, especially if its a larger meal, but don't recline! Reducing stress in general would help.
Until you get to a doctor, you could also try Tums or Rolaids. They work in a pinch for mild heartburn and reflux. Your doc will probably give you a proton pump inhibitor, like Prilosec or Nexium, and they might want to set you up for a gastroscopy to check for any damage.0 -
I have the same problem, and also persistent drainage when i'm waking up from sleeping.
I have acid reflux. I take a proton pump inhibitor that helps tremendously.0 -
Awesome awesome awesome info. Its funny, people complain about Heart burn or acid reflux but I never quite knew what they felt like. My doctor has proven to be less then helpful, as he had a nurse call me about my blood work tell me im fine, then I come to find it online (after digging for it because no one mailed me it) and find I am horribly vitamin D deficient.
Thanks for the info! Its good to have some ammo for the next time I see a doctor, ask him how to fix it! Seems like too often doctors are like "lose some weight!" before trying to fix a real issue.0 -
You could try tums or Zantac to see if it helps for now. I know that reflux can manifest itself in different forms... for me it was easy to see because I would wake up with what I had for dinner in my mouth (sorry TMI).
That being said... it's gone since I lost weight. It's probably not because of the weight though, but because my diet is healthier (and I eat much less, obviously).0
