Don't be ON a diet....HAVE a diet.

"1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men in the U.S. are on a DIET." - Colorado University

Statistics show that when the "diet" is over, 90-95% of those people will not only gain the weight they lost back, but they will actually put on more weight. Why would anyone want to temporarily be healthy or fit? I believe most people on this web site know and realize this, but a lot of us are still falling for the same gimmicks that the Diet, Weight Loss, and Food industries have made billions of dollars trying to fool us with.

I'm writing this because I feel like I have a pretty well balanced diet and excercise lifestyle. Sure, I still endulge in the occasional ice cream, greasy pizza, girl scout cookie, or craft beer. (Ok, maybe beer more so than the others) But I also have fallen for some of these tricks and marketing lies in search for a healthier lifestyle. If you are having trouble losing or keeping off weight, you may be a victim to some of these marketing monsters. The Diet and Food industries do not have your best interest at heart. They make money on you being overweight and being addicted to the "food" you're eating.

Just wanted to pass on some really good documentaries that I've seen recently that may open some eyes and help you in your weight loss journey. These can all be found on Netflix. Check out:

- Hungry For Change (Fantastic doc)
- Sick, Fat, and Nearly Dead
- Food Matters (Interesting look at health and the medical system)
- Vegucated (I am not endorsing vegan or vegetarian eating. I eat meat. However, I do try to eat it more consciously, and less than I have in the past. It's really not necessary to eat the amount of meat an average American eats. More fruits and veggies is always a great thing in a diet!)

When I talk about my diet I am coming from a nursing standpoint meaning: the foods that I eat. I realize I am in the minority here. But very true what you say about dieting. In fact when I hit my goal weight I loosened up the diet and gained back 9 of my 30 recently lost pounds in just a few months little by little. It is good to know that maintenance does not take care of itself. It requires every bit it dedication to your eating and exercise choices that helped you to lose weight in the first place.

As long as you mentioned documentaries I'll mention my "diet": Eat to Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. (www.drfuhrman.com) I think he was mentioned or featured in one or two of those documentaries. I LOVE my diet! Can't imagine eating any other way. On first glance most would walk away shaking their heads, but when you actually do start to follow it (and you can go 75% - 90 % to 100% in) how you feel is absolutely incredible! This is eating to avoid disease and even recover your health! IT is the power of produce that you will never realize until you increase your daily amount. The energy I have is way more at 56 years old than ever before in my life. And being a sugarholic just getting rid of refined grains and sugars in all forms except from whole plants and fruits is so freeing. I can say no to sugar now where before I was powerless. Great that some can do it all in moderation, but for me just a little bit of sugar a day is like giving an alcoholic just one beer a day and telling them to just have one and it will be okay. Everything in moderation, right? For me - wrong!

You have to find what works for you. This works for me! Wish I'd had known about the power of eating healthy whole foods decades ago. It is so simple it is actually stupid! Thanks for your post!
