A question. I read a lot that people eat more protein to preserve muscle mass when on a diet, without exercising. To me this sounds like bro-science. I'd think protein, and other macros are there to fuel the body. But if you're at a hefty deficit in my opinion the body doesn't think: oh, there's chicken for dinner today. Lets preserve muscles mass and take the energy from fat. Am I right?

    Pretty much.

Adequate protein + lifting in a deficit can help promote muscle retention; but protein alone generally isn't enough.
