How often do you exercise a week? Right now I am just starting out and trying to stay active. I am not doing any crazy routines as of yet mainly walking or doing short 10 minute work outs (crunches, lunges, squats ect) but I'm wondering if this should be everyday or every other. What has worked for you?

Hi, I'm a certified personal trainer. It depends on your goals and fitness background.

It's important to work towards your goals in a healthy and safe manner, plus it's just better for long term health! This is why your fitness background is important. The past year is good enough to look back on.

Fitness comes in many forms, trainings, capabilities, it's amazing! This is why your goal is an important factor. For example, a marathon runner won't train the way a body builder would. Marathon runners train for strength, but ESPECIALLY muscle endurance, while body builders would focus their training towards strength and hypertrophy ("all for show").

But to keep simple, working out three days a week is a great start for beginners. Now depending if you want to lose, maintain, or gain weight, those are entirely different trainings. Your routine now would be considered more of maintenance training. If you would like to gain weight, stick to cardio once a week and look into resistance training.

I do a high intensity circuit workout 2-3 times a week. In addition, I usually do a 6-10 mile hike once a week. The other days maybe I'll walk for an hour, or do nothing...rest day.
