I am a 50 yr old woman who has never lifted or exercised with weights in my life. I know pathetic :(
Can anyone advise me where to start? I would like to firm up my arms.

You'll be best starting with a recognised beginners routine.

What equipment will you have available to you?

Barbells? NROL, All Pro's SBR, Starting Strength or Stronglifts 5x5.

Minimal/No Equipment? Convict Conditioning, You are your own gym, startbodyweight.com (http://www.startbodyweight.com/p/start-bodyweight-basic-routine.html)

    Machines?: http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/muscle-gain/beginning-weight-training-part-4.html/

Kettlebells?: Simple and Sinister, Enter the Kettlebell

More details on each by following the links or googling the name or the book/app.

    To add:

The majority of your results will come from your diet: High protein and a moderate calorie deficit will help retain/increase lbm whilst you lose fat. Too high a deficit or too low protein and you'll be losing the good stuff..

    I suggest stronglifts 5x5.

I have an exercise ball, 5lb weights, stretch bands. I've lost a total of 27 lbs....with 47 to go...I need to make muscle to eat the fat. At least that's what has been explained to me. How can I do that with any machine at a Y or the things I have listed above?

@ryliestrong: Building strength requires that you have more weights available that you have at home. Really take a look at the Starting Strength and Stronglifts programs.

As @jimmmer above has already said, eating less will cause you to lose weight. I'll add a strength program will cause you grow stronger and increase your overall mobility.
  • I second the Stronglifts 5x5 program.

    I suggest stronglifts 5x5.

Excellent suggestion. I've been doing this for a few months now and definitely see a difference in how I look and the strength that I now have because of it. Stronglifts 5X5 is a very easy program to follow too.

Thank you all for the excellent advice. I having been using 3 lb weights for my workouts. Hopefully I will be steadily using more weight.

I'd suggest a couple sessions with a trainer. So you make sure you develop good habits, lifting safely and working the way to get the results you want.
