thinking I need to start adding muscle. Do supplements really work?
Whenever the best time to take a shake?
Any tips out there. I see plenty of ripped dudes on here, how do you do it?

Protein supplements (whey, casein, pea protein, beef protein etc) do work... yes, but they're meant to be used along with a diet with complements your exercise (couldn't think of a worse way to word that).
It doesn't really matter, some people will say post workout and some will say pre workout. As long as you get it in somewhere, you'll be fine.
I'm far from ripped, but - I hit my macros, I lift things up and put them down.0 -
Being ripped comes down to diet plain and simple. You can't out train or out supplement a crappy diet.
Supplements are an aide. They are not 'magic in a bottle' and do not take away the need for consistency, discipline and hard work.
Do they work? yes if you pick the appropriate supplementation and implement it properly using it as an aide to a diet and training program in line with your goal. Add in the consistency, discipline and hard work I mentioned and you'll reach your desired goal.
Protein shakes are not necessary if you can/prefer take in the required amount of protein through whole foods. They are a personal choice often dictated by convenience (it's a lot quicker to drink 25g of protein than chow down on say a chicken breast).
If you want to get really serious then you start getting into the nitty gritty of digestion times of whey isolates, concentrates, hydrolysates and miscellar casein, (or soy, beef, pea, vegan proteins if that's what you prefer to use)
I personally opt for a whey hydrolysate pre-work out and then a whey/casein mix for post work out, but that's me others may do it differently dependent on when they work out and personal choice/knowledge.
There's lots of good articles available and my suggestion is to do your research and decide what you feel would work best for you.

Check Muscle Fitness website
Some say to drink that quick 20g of protein shake 15 minutes before lifting. That is a tiny bit of a shake so it isn't messing your workout up. And it gives you nutrients at the time of use.
Then another little 20g protein drink immediately after. Rebuild during that tiny time window when the nutrients are supposedly needed.
Opinions vary a bit on that whole ball of wax. We are only talking 180 calories total do it is not a big deal to fit in.
I do it and think it helps. I am older and do more of the little things to get muscle growth. But.... I only want lean muscle added, not a bulking up phase of gaining lots of fat.
So my protein add ins are just 20g before and after a hard lifting day. Not on a normal workout day or cardio day.
Read up and try a few things to see what works.
IMO the shakes are only an add on to a solid diet and exercise program. They are not a magic bullet.
YMMV
Good luck with it!0 -
