yesterday was my first day doing sit ups, stomach exercises, arm exercises with weights, etc and now my back (lower to the left) hurts pretty bad this morning. What did I do wrong?

You may need to build up a stronger core, or perhaps your form was off so you tweaked something.0

It sounds like Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, but could be sciatica issues. I'm guessing that it was your sit ups or stomach exercises that caused it. It's possible you had bad form. Take it easy for a few days and skip the stomach focused exercises. You'll be using your time more wisely if you look into full body exercise routines.0

If you're new to exercise, it could be a shock to your body.
Especially if your stomach strength isn't developed.
Best to rest it for a few days, and do some very gentle stretching exercises 2-3 times a day.
If your posture and form wasn't right you may have tweaked a muscle for sure.
Best advice is to get a trainer to do 1-2 sessions with you, show you correct form and write you a plan that you can continue on your own. That way you wont hurt yourself again and you will get the most effective specific exercises for your goal. Good Luck0
