Trainers.

Spent 90 minutes with an "expert" telling me *kitten* I already know or could have figured out myself. Burned a whopping 50 calories doing it. Hmmm......

i think having a trainer is less about learning/instruction and more about having in-person motivation

Good communication with your trainer is a cornerstone to having a good working relationship with your trainer and being able to reach your goals.

If your unhappy then go back and discuss the reasons why you were left feeling frustrated. A good trainer will discuss and address your concerns.

Experience will usually matter when choosing a trainer. Someone who just looks fit may be the "oooh they must know what they are doing" conviction that some use to decide, but really all that means is that that trainer knows how to train themselves correctly. It doesn't confirm that they know how to deal with someone who may have metabolic issues, lack of mobility, lack of flexibility, prior injured joints, ligaments or tendons, etc. Unfortunately sometimes it's a trial an error test for some.
Myself, I get specific reasons why they are doing what they are doing. The "I just want to lose weight" isn't specific. I'll usually ask "if you got to your goal, what would be the first thing you do?" Many times that helps me to understand their reasoning for wanting to lose weight.
