hey everyone
So I'm a nurse so I work 12 hour shifts, I need ideas for what to take for lunches that are filling but not healthy? Right now I'm stuck in a soup rut and I'm barely lasting the day!
Thanks in advance x

I am also a nurse and work 12 hour night shifts, I like to take a few smaller snacks that I can eat at my computer if I have to. Some of my common choices are chicken salad with what thins, greek yogurt with granola, lunch meat with cheese slices or string cheese, cut fruit, almonds, jerky, baby carrots and sugar snap peas, or sometimes I'll bring leftovers or a small salad :)

I like to have variety that requires minimal effort to prepare at the office or eat. The average day involves a fresh fruit medely (I'll prep fruit for the week - usually blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, and either mango or kiwi). I also bring nuts, usually cashews, a banana, a protien drink (Orgain Vegan), and either soup, a salad, or a homemade sandwich (usually avocado and provolone with spinach, arugula, onions, and tomatoe on ciabatta). I also keep a super fruit trail mix on hand and cacao nibs if I want to mindlessly snack. Other items that I find convenient are organic rice in a pouch - you can either heat it or eat it straight out of the package (recommend putting it in a glass container if you hear it), boxed bean (same prep as the rice), and veggies (carrots, broccoli, etc). I usually spend an hour Sunday evenings getting everything ready for the week so it's prepackaged and ready to go. I can't have dairy, but I get plain yogurt for my husband and mix it with cereal, fresh fruit, and drizzle honey on it. I'll prepare several (put the cereal on top so it doesn't get soggy) so they can just be grabbed as needed. Hope this gave you some ideas.

I bring a snack and lunch to work. Usually berry's and yogurt for snack and soup and half a sandwich for lunch. I only work 10 hours compared to your 12, so I eat dinner soon after I get home around 9pm.

I like having a few slices of lean deli turkey or lean ham with a big piece of lettuce on top of each, I spread a little hummus on each one and roll 'em up. I've done it with ham and swiss with spicy brown mustard too, but that's a bit higher on the calorie side.

I'll cook up a batch (usually bake but sometimes grill) of chicken breasts or thighs. I can put a portion of the chicken in a microwaveable container with some frozen broccoli, beans, carrots or whatnot. Reheats very well and just takes a few minutes in the morning to put together. Take with some fruit or bread or something to round out the meal.

go higher on the protein. When I'm working, I bring in stuff to make a salad (in my BAB -- Big *kitten* Bowl) and then also have 5-7 ounces of chicken thigh or breasts. Generally holds me from 11:00 to dinner.

    Nurses rock!

Nothing wrong with packing a filling sandwich. My daily sandwich is only 243 calories and I absolutely love it. I even splurge and use a piece of thin sliced cheddar cheese (45 cals). Trader Joe's Rustico Bread, 2 slices thin ham or turkey, 1 slice of cheese...and my secret is mustard rather than mayo. There are lower cal breads if needed.

Sometimes I take a BIG handful of baby spinach and make a wrap with some added pieces of lunch meat and cheese.

    Wash those hands!
