Which race are you doing? By the sounds of it - your training is probably adequately preparing you, depending on what exactly you are doing. The race would make a difference in my recommendation for you. For example if you are doing the VT Beast - you should be lunging and squatting your life away.

The elites all seems to train in different ways. Some seem to run like crazy, others do mostly just crossfit, etc. I think the best way to train is to improve upon your weakness. So if you are not a fast runner, train to run faster. If you can't do hills, you should be doing hills. If your upper body needs work to get over the walls, work on that. OCR is all about overall functional fitness. You need to have physical (and mental) strength, stamina and endurance.

Currently I use racing to train for racing. I have a full schedule and am seeing awesome improvements. I do some P90X stuff during the week mixed in with soccer and trail running. Feel free to PM me with questions or add me.

I ran obstacle courses in my military days

Most often people struggled with the climbing things at the end when you were pretty gassed from running hard to get a good time.

I would say to interval train for 20 minutes hard, and then see how many pull ups you can do solo and with an assist. Do dips after that till you fail.

If you write your counts down it will be easy to see progress.

Your mind set has much to do with those personal challenge things. If you can go in with confidence, you will be much more focused on tasks not are you gonna gas out.
