When you first start dieting and losing weight, how long is it before you stop losing water weight and start losing real fat?

That is all completely dependent on a few factors such as; 1) how much water you're drinking. 2) what kind of exercises you're doing. 3) how much you have to lose. If you drink about 2 liters of water a day and make sure you're doing cardio you're going to lose water weight faster. (At least in my experience. If I'm wrong, please let me know!)

You start losing fat from the first day you're in a calorie deficit.

For me, I told myself the first 5lbs lost was just water weight. Mainly because the ads on TV say "Lose 5lbs the first week guaranteed!" so I assume they are trying to fool some suckers into thinking they're losing actual weight when it's really just water weight.

I could be wrong though. Someone will correct me I'm sure.

And how many carbs you are eating and how much sodium you are eating, and, and, and.....

It really depends on so many factors how much water weight you will lose and how fast.

If you are sweating then you are losing water weight. You should always be able to regain water weight quickly by drinking water. Not gaining that weight back is a sign you are not rehydrating properly. I wrestled in high school and they made us weigh in before and after practice to monitor our water loss. It was possible to lose 7 lbs in a single practice. Actual loss of body mass is much slower. Remember to stay hydrated in order to remain healthy. Good luck!

The initial big whoosh of water weight happened during the first 2-3 weeks for me. I was about 50 pounds over a healthy weight for my height. If you are heavier, that initial big loss may last a bit longer.
