Low impact cardio for sore knees?

After a while of high impact cardio like running and uphill standing cycling, my knees are aching a great deal. What other activities could I do while my knees heal a little?

swimming...more flat cycling
also for the cycling, have you been properly fitted to your bike? most cycling knee issues arise from improper fit as well as improper use of gears.0 -
I have a bum knee so I'm in the same boat. I love kickboxing. I just keep it low impact and my knee does fine. I still get a good calorie burn (50-75 calories less than when I do the class high impact). Like the other poster said, swimming. When you bike or spin, sit more and up the resistance.0

I've had some knee pain lately and have really been enjoying the elliptical, set to a programme that mimics a series of increasing hills.0

A little OT but knee pain is often a manifestation of weak glutes and/or hips.
Here are a couple of ideas that may help prevent it in the future......

Anything involving water. Swimming, obviously, but if you're not a strong swimmer, you can also just do cardio in the pool -- running in the shallow end, holding the edge and kicking, holding onto a floater and kicking our way across, whatever.0
