i hear, and see, a lot on the Internet about chia seeds. In a lot of cases this seems to be contradictory.

The simple question is:

Do they live up to the hype???

They do not live up to the hype. They are similar to flax seeds in terms of calories, protein, omega 3. You can make a "type" of pudding with the chia seeds because when they are in liquid they have gel-like properties

I am not sure what "hype" there is out there, but they are a great at keeping you regular. I think they are more pleasant than flax seeds but other claims may be inflated.

They're nice to make chia "pudding" and chia fresca, which is light juice with chia seeds for texture. If you chew them they have a very light watermelon-like taste. Lots of fiber and some protein, overall decent, but not anything special unless you want the gelling properties or dislike the taste of flax.

I also read everything I could find about them on the internet but like you said the info is a lot of contradictions. So I bought a very small bag to try it out for myself. I used them in my smoothies. I personally felt no effect at all and they definitely did not keep me feeling full longer. When I have extra calories I will toss them in since I have them to use up but wont buy again.

They have 3 to 1 the ratio of omega 3s to 6s. They are high in calcium. Also they are said to be androgenic vs estrogenic for flax seeds which is better for men. They have an amino acid score of 115 which is pretty high. But they don't have any vitamins according to the nutrition data.

I like adding them to drinks and they are great in puddings like the previous posts have said.

I didn't know there was hype. Unless the "hype" is coming from doctors and scientists, I skip it.

I do know that ChiaPets are very difficult to grow. :)

You should ground the chia and flax seeds into a powder or they will pass through you. You may not feel the effects at first but eventually they will help all of your cells and yes, keep you regular (but this also may depend on what else you are eating.)

You're not supposed to grind the chia seeds. The gel coating on the outside of the seed is where the regularity help comes from.

I don't find that chia seeds affects my body in any way, shape, or form.

I do think they are a fun addition to my diet though. Strawberry water with chia seeds or watermelon agua fresca with chia seeds are A+. I also add them to yogurt. I love the texture of the gel coating.

The gel-like coating of the seeds is great for making puddings, I've blended fruit and almond milk together and stirred in chia seeds to make a custardy-breakfast pudding a few times, which makes a change from oats and eggs. I can't vouch for any health giving properties but they are fun to play around with.

My 12g of chia seeds has 5g of fiber. When I mix 24g of chia seed with 1.5 cups of Hint of Honey Vanilla Almond Milk I get 12g of fiber and like 8g or protein for 210 calories. That's nearly half the daily recommended amount of fiber, and I'm on a high fiber diet per my GI and surgeon so I'll take all the high fiber foods I can!
