flexibility and the splits

I'm looking to improve my flexibility, I know that it's a long term quest (i'm starting with some beginner stretches once a day, i've no delusions of sudden progress :) ).

my question is, will it ever be possible for me to be able to do the splits? i'm 32 and it's implied you're meant to start young to achieve this. any advice and or success stories?
