Mark Rippletoe is ADAMANT in this video at no point do the hips come forward... but I feel like, and was always under the impression... at some point they have to complete the movement at the top. So my question is Is my understanding of low bar squat that bad that I'm missing what he's saying or just more of "you just don't know *kitten* about this and you need to learn more?"
I freely admit I dabbled in low bar and found I disliked the compression on my spine- so I switched back to high bar- so I haven't spent as much time with it. But my friend wants to come do more work with me- and she seems to have fallen on the low bar side of the squat rack (disappointingly so) so I feel more uncomfortable giving her advice- especially after refreshing myself with some of the more detailed points to hit this- I'm feeling annoyed/confused.
Please discuss.

I don't know. I used Rippetoe's video to learn how to low bar squat. In the original one I watched he doesn't stress that as much. At heavier weights, I naturally won't bring my hips forward in a low bar squat-just doesn't feel right. I'm actually more surprised at the guy's wrists because in Rippetoe's other low bar squat video he emphasizes not having them hyper-extended like that.0

Yeah I saw that. Odd- Hoping more folks chime in as Monday rolls around.0

Hm. This is odd. I looked over the squat section in his book again, and he seems to just repeat that you need to be pushing up with your hips - not much else regarding hip movement. And the wrist angle in this video is exactly what he describes as incorrect in the book.0

Yeah, I'm sorry I can only speak from personal experience and can't add much. I just feel that with the low bar squat, bringing the hips too far forward to complete the move at the top feels wrong because you have to straighten out your back a bit too much in order to do it, and the weight does not feel supported.
But now the wrist thing is bothering me because I've had a heck of a hard time trying to get them straight and it's been worrying me that I cannot.
Agree. I'd like to hear what others have to say about the hips too.0 -
Look up Jonnie Candito's video titled something like
Hip Drive -- Why Mark Rippetoe is Wrong.
It was quite controversial but for what it's worth, I think Jonnie is correct on this.0 -

I remembered the heat this generated...
Check out an "official" starting strength coach guy responding (2nd post), here:

It seems the whole thing is part of teaching progression rather than a "finished product". This "drill" teaches the "spazzy" beginner to engage the glutes and hams at the right time. The argument is once this is all in place, once you introduce the right torso angle out of the hole, then all the right things will kick in at the right time to get proper knee and hip extension.
It's been a while since I've personally low-barred and, hand on heart, I'm not sure what I exactly did now. I didn't learn to do it via this drill that leads on to a hip extended loaded version, though. And I'm sure no one outside of Rip's facility, or his seminars, has either. So I can't really give a fair assessment of what the SS guy says or how effective it is...
