Weight lifting stunts growth?

People told me that weightlifting would stunt growth. Is this true?

    Only way you're going to stunt your growth is if you some how damage your growth plates with terribly bad form... and even that takes quite a bit of doing.

    No, although many people recommend staying away from weight training until teen years.

    No. There is enough research out there regarding Strength Training and adolescents.

    1. Strength training should be intelligently applied with anybody but should also be supervised when dealing with children / adolescents.
    2. No it does not stunt your growth and it is even recommended that children and adolescents that are involved in sports get involved in some kind of strength training as it can help prevent non-contact injuries such as ankle sprains and knee injuries.
    3. See if you can find NASM's stance on training children / adolescents; it should be out there somewhere.

    Taking steroids young will stunt your growth by prematurely fusing growth plates in your bones. Lifting weights will not, and weight lifting is associated with increased production of growth hormone which is a positively correlated with growth (no brainier by the name right?).

    Not at all. Resistance training is an excellent conditioning tool and should be applied across all sports.
