10 pounds in a month

i have a goal of losing 10 pounds this month, and i was wondering what everyone else has as a goal, and if 10 pounds is too lofty a goal? someone reminded me that today is the 1st of the month, so it's the perfect time to set a new goal. plus, my wedding anniversary is august 1, so that is a great time to have a new weight loss goal. would love to hear from anyone else who would like to list your goals...and let me know if you think 10 lbs is too much for one month. TFS :flowerforyou:

If you have 75+ lbs to lose in total, it's probably within the realm of possibility.
If you have less than that to lose in total, it's probably too lofty of a goal.0 -
10 Lbs in a month is a very fast rate of loss and may or may not be tenable depending on how much total weight you would need to lose. If you're not obese/morbidly obese, I wouldn't count on it...it is a very aggressive goal...somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-8 Lbs is more likely but you really still have to consider that losing weight isn't a linear process and women tend to have less linear progress than men given their hormonal fluctuations.0

Then I'd echo cwolfman13's post...5 lbs in a month is probably more reasonable.0 -
I have the same goal! I'd like to lose 10 pounds this month. I am 5'3" and I weigh 136 but I am trying to get down to 115 by the end of October. I think we can absolutely reach our goal as long as we stay focused. Feel free to add to to keep each other accountable! How is your diet?0

Short of completely starving yourself, at 136 lbs you won't be losing 10 lbs a month.0 -

At 5'3" and 136, depending on your activity level, you likely have a TDEE of 1700-2100 calories. To lose 10 pounds in one month, you need a 1166 calorie deficit each day. Which means your net calories would have to be between 534 and 934. Not a good idea in my opinion. I think you need to reassess your goals.0 -

I know, supportive, encourage people....
So you think it is a great idea for someone who is already within a healthy weight range for their height to try and lose 10lbs in a month?
Even your 5lb a month goal to the end of October is already aggressive and should probably be closer to somewhere between 0.5 and 1lb a week as opposed to over 1lb a week.

Then no, it's not reasonable. Aim for about half of that.0 -

i am at a "supposedly" healthy weight for my height and i am WAYYYYYY overweight. my dr says i don't need to lose any and yet i am almost 50 pounds heavier than i was at my normal weight before i got pregnant. i don't know where you are getting your information that me or the other poster are "already within a healthy weight range for their height."

so that would be about a pound a week. that seems too little...especially since i'm just starting. i understand toward the end of weight loss, when you get closer to goal, but shouldn't i be able to hit 2 lbs a week at the beginning?

Sure. Hike in the mountains for 30 days, at the rate of 15 to 20 miles a day, and only eat about 2500 calories. You can do it!0
-
At your current weight, if you are 5'6" or under, it's ambitious but attainable.0

Have you calculated the caloric deficit required to lose 2 pounds a week based on your current stats? If not, there is no way to know if you should be able to do that. 2 pounds of fat is roughly 7000 calories. To lose that, you need to burn 1000 calories PER DAY more than you eat. While eating enough to provide your body with the energy it needs to function.

Unfortunately I wasn't responding to you OP, because you had already been given the right advice (5lbs to maybe 8lbs counting water weight which will be regained at the end).
I was responding to the second poster who is a 136lb 5ft 3" female. As such her BMI is under 25. If she is very unmuscular then she would be more fat than normal. If she was very muscular she might be leaner than normal. But in both cases she is within a normal weight range as opposed to, for example, being in an obese 3 weight range, or an overweight to obese 1 weight range.
And knowing her weight range we can make a guess as to what a safe rate of loss would be for her... and surprisingly it is between 0.5 and 1lb a week making a 10lb in a month challenge unsuitable for her.
I am not going to sit and look up every bmi height weight table, but I can tell you that as a 5ft 8" male a healthy weight range for me spans a total of about 30lbs.
I somehow find it difficult to believe that you have a normal weight range that spans 50lbs.
Either your doctor does not recognise that you are now overweight, or your original weight was in the underweight range.
It is easy to solve.... stick your current weight and height in a bmi calculator and you will have an approximation as to your weight status generally speaking....0 -

i am 5 ft. 6.5 inches tall and i am 44 years old. i am 167 pounds, and i am very very active. my goal weight is 124, which is my "normal" weight, it was what i weighed before i put on this weight, and what i AM going to get back to.

So this takes you 43lbs, from marginally overweight to the absolute bottom of healthy BMI.
I wish you good luck on your journey.
If you really are extremely active and would like to remain so and retain your muscle and health I advise you to try to get there at maybe 1lb a week in the beginning tapering to 0.5lbs a week before not too long. Not by trying to do so at 2lbs a week...
Based on previous MFP experience I will be waiting for the innevitable I am eating 1200Cal and exercising 2000Cal for a negative 800 and have stopped menstruating (or similar) thread.
I hope that instead i will get extremely and pleasantly surprised and find out you've joined the MFP ladies who lift heavy weights and who are building healthy strong and fat free bodies while continuing to eat a reasonable amount of food....

It can be done but it takes a lot of hard work. I was 210 pounds in March. Today I weighed in at 169. That is 41 pounds in four months. Granted I am still in my teens so I have a high metabolism. Just make sure you do it in a safe manner with healthy eating habits!0

well i had a hysterectomy so you won't be hearing that i stopped my periods. L0L but i know what you mean...
i used to lift heavy, in fact, that was my life! then i got pregnant, yada yada yada, its a long boring story and now i'm fat. my brother gave me a professional grade elliptical and i'm starting to get back into working-out, too. it hasn't been easy, not to mention i am taking tons of meds and they are a major negative influence on my weight. i put on about 30 lbs because of them. i am going to try to do it the "right way" but dammm it's difficult not to jump in and starve myself. i hate feeling this way.

But the right way does work!
And starving for a while has its own set of problems longer term... I.e short term success, but at cost of muscle mass, of body adaptation to fewer calories... and long term strength and muscle mass (within a healthy weight range) are better predictors of longevity that a low weight/bmi...0 -

Yeah, 4-8 is WAY more realistic.

This comment......not cool bro.0 -
Given your age (ESPECIALLY if you've had a total hysterectomy), I'd push into weights earlier rather than later. You actually CAN build some bone density at your age. I certainly wouldn't want to lose it.
I've been a bit jumpy because I accidentally gave myself an ulcer with NSAIDs + diary. I'm soooo glad it seems to be healed because I want to put the dairy back into my diet! It's really, really not good for me (or any woman) to be low calcium (and supplements don't help as much as milk).0 -

i sound like an anorexic?? how so? i weighed 124 for most of my adult life, outside of being pregnant. how is that anorexic? it is a healthy BMI and i looked and felt healthy. i also lifted weights and i was strong. i don't see how you can name-call me anorexic simply because i do not want to weigh close to 170 pounds. THAT is overweight.
