My actual calories burned during cardio was significantly higher than any calculator I used prior to buying an HRM. Most calculators put me ar 250 for a 30 minute HIIT class by my actual burn was 450 fir the same class using an HRM. I definitely recommend purchasing an HRM if you want to accurately track your caloric burn and intake for weight loss or maintenance.

I bought a Mio Drive HRM watch here: http://stores.ebay.com/n-y-bill They are around $20-$30 which is a great deal considering they retail for $80

I researched the brand before buying and they were reviewed as accurate compared to more expensive HRM's on Amazon. I checked mine against my own heart rate and found it consistently accurate within 3 beats per minute. I've used mine daily for 3 weeks and really like it. You do have to check your heart rate by pressing buttons on either side of the watch face which doesn't bother me. There are more expensive models that track calories without manually checking your heart rate. If your budget is higher, I've heard Polar is a good brand.

I hope this info is useful!

Hi there! I am in a similar position of wanting a HRM/calorie counter. I see the fancy ones like Nike+ ($150!?) bracelets and I don't know if a different brand might suffice at a smaller price, without looking like a child's watch.

I had a polar F15 for years and loved it and used it. I just ordered a Basis B1. This thing not only calculates calories burned, but also tracks my steps, my time standing vs. sitting, the quality of my sleep, etc. It's spendy ($200) but I'm excited about the additional features for overall health improvement.

I use a Polar FT4 and it's perfect for my needs. Logs your workout based on: duration, calorie burn, in zone duration, average heart rate, maximum heart rate. It holds ten workouts at a time and I log in MFP so I can compare from workout to workout :)

HRMs are no good if you are thinking about wearing one all day to see calories burned, they are VERY good however, when used in exercise where the heartrate is elevated, they are suitable for all cardio, but not for things such as cleaning, cooking or wearing all the time.
