Hi Everyone!

I have lost around 35 pounds in 4 months....I am 5'0 , 27 yrs old and came down from 167.2 to 132 pounds.I have Hypothyroidism .Before joining MFP my thyroid(TSH) was borderline normal and now after 5-6 months its is more...Jumped from 6-9 where normals are till 4(change of med and lowered dosage)....My doctor had suggested to consume less Protein and increased my Thyroxin(Med) dosage..I have been drinking Whey Protein since last month...I also do Strength training and have been progressing quite good . Just wanted to know how much Protein you have...Will all the yogurt ,egg, chicken, lentils ,cottage cheese and fish I eat and MFP's calculation, I get 60-80 grams of protein without the whey Protein shake..I also don't want to lose my strength and muscle(newbie gain)..

Just wanted to know should I continue drinking whey....Also how much protein do you consume. Is it like we should eat less Protein with Hypothyroidism .

Thanks!

To be honest, I've never heard that people w/ hypothyroidism should consume less protein.
I'm also borderline normal (the last time my doctor checked was quite some time ago though) and I have at least 100g of protein/day, 115g on most days. I don't feel it is hindering my progress/weight loss in any way.

TSH is the worst test to diagnose or treat hypothyroidsim. Why treat thyroid based on a non thyroid hormone?

Protein intake has no relevance in regards to hypothyroidism as long as adequate amounts of carbs are being consumed. Some amount of carbs are required for proper T4 to T3 conversion.

I've been hypothyroid for many years. A high protein low carb approach works best for me. I have at least 100 grams of protein a day, including a whey shake for breakfast, and keep my net carbs to less than 50. I am satisfied and never hungry and just had blood work done last week and everything is within normal range. I've lost 18 pounds since May 7. I also do cardio and weight training for a total of 7 hours a week minimum.

T3 an T4 is what you need to go by. Whenever I get my blood work done if my TSH is low I am always told to get my T4 and T3 tested to see where those are.

It's like with cholesterol. You total cholesterol could be high but your LDL's and HDL's are in the right range.

Total doesn't really mean anything. It's the individual numbers that count. And to address the original post I don't see how protein has anything to do with your thyroid.

TSH's role is to signal thyroid to produce the proper amount of hormones. If T3 and T4 are great, (yes TSH should be in the 1.0 - 2.0 range), than why worry what TSH is saying. The body is not an infallible system.

I have hypothyroidism and I have never heard to watch your protein intake. Hmm. I have mine set to 40 I think. I just had my thyroid tested again and will be going back to doc in a couple weeks to go over my bloodwork. I will see what he says about it.

Exactly What protein does is help "smooth out" your sugar intake. You eat something with sugar and the proteins help your body absorb it more slowly so it doesn't have the big swings of high and low on you. I would get another opinion if your doc is telling you to LOWER your protein...that really sounds counter-intuitive!

I am underactive with my thyroid on levo 100mg, lost 48 lbs in 4 months, never heard about my thyroid and protein relation. My MFP goal is 62 of protein a day.

I too am hypothyroid. I just read an article yesterday that advised we have lowfat, low carb diets. Consume mainly lean proteins. I am starting this today...

Also from my experience and reading, I can advise you to:
*take your meds, if you are on them, first thing in the morning with a glass of water. Avoid hot coffee for at least 30 minutes.
*minimize soy products and cabbage. both can interfere with medication absorption.

I have had Hypothyroidism for about 20 years. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease (a deterioration of the Thyroid) about 5 years ago.

I used to drink a whey protein shake every morning, but found that it was affecting my digestive system. Bloating, constipation, etc. I have been trying to get my protein from chicken, fish, nuts, etc. My protein numbers aren't as high, but my body feels a lot better. I use weights, but wouldn't say I "lift", so did I really need the whey protein? I don't know. I also have Rhumatoid Arthritis so weight training is sometimes painful, which is why I stick to 3, 5 and 10lb hand weights.

Like everything else, it's unique to you and what your body is telling you. Listen to your body and you can't go wrong. Second and third opinions are priceless too. Had I not gone to an Endocrine Doc, I never would have known about the Hashimoto's and I wouldn't have gotten the med adjustment that was sorely needed.

Hmm, some interesting posts here. I'm hypothyroid and have been finding it hard to lose weight. However, I recently found this ketone calculator web page which works it all out for you and realise I've just been eating far too much. If you also click on 'protein intake while dieting' it takes you to another page which is very interesting too.
