Upset stomach... what to eat?

I didn't eat badly yesterday, was under my calories, but went a bit over on fat and carbs because I had a small slice of chocolate cake.

My stomach was upset all night, and it's frankly not much better this morning. I used to have stomach issues, that's why I'm so careful with my fat intake, but I guess the steak, cheese and cake from last night was too much (and I was only 6g over too)...

What can I eat that won't mess up my stomach totally? At least it doesn't hurt, it's just uncomfortable at this point. I used not to be able to eat much of anything when it happened though, and I don't have saltines, white rice etc in my house anymore.

You sure it was the cake? Usually takes 12-24 hours for your body to react to something bad.

Probably. It's always been very fast for me.

I find that what often works for me is eating some yoghurt--just make sure it has live active cultures in it and is not too processed, meaning I'd skip the Yoplait Whips or anything with aspartame in it.

Doesn't work in every instance of stomach upset--but when it does work, it works well for me.

Listen to your body and eat what appeals. You ate a load of rich stuff yesterday so keep things simple today and definitely stay off anything fatty. Toast, apples, grilled chicken, steamed veg, natural yoghurt ... whatever you can face. Drink lots of water and tea. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone. I'll try toast and applesauce or something... Maybe I'll nuke some veggies. Having some water right now.

I know when I eat something with a lot of sugar it gets to me, and it hits quickly... I try to have either a peppermint or a helping of regular dannon activia yogurt, typically vanilla.

How close did you eat to bedtime? I've started getting heartburn if I eat too late in the day.

I find whole-grain cereal with almond milk to be soothing.

I went to bed very early last night, maybe 1.5 hour after dinner. I used to have heartburn too but it doesn't feel like it, just like my good old stomach pains lol.

My mother-in-law suffers from anxiety-related stomach pain, and also from stomach upsets if she eats too much of something or something unfamiliar. She always makes potato soup for her upset tum and gets a lot of relief. She grates a potato and simmers it in chicken stock to cover, adds a bit of milk after cooking and that is pretty much it.

how many? only supposed to be one LOL. If you are potassium sensitive (sounds like it) then try the rice, applesauce or toast (plain)

    Lol just one.

I had a toast. Seems to be ok so far. I'm going to love my macros tonight, I can tell.

I have the same issues, so stay away from any fats the day after a bad stomach. It seems like my body can't break them down as readily because I've been dieting, so I have to wait it out.

Not sure if you're familiar with congee- basically rice porridge.

You cook short grain rice (not basmati) in chicken stock say about 1 cup rice to 7 cups water and keep stirring till you have a thick savory soupy porridge. You can thin down with more water or thicken by cooking down a bit longer.

At college I had a Chinese roommate and she made me this when I had a kidney infection. I couldn't eat anything, everything was too sweet or salty or sour and would make me really uncomfortable. This was the perfect stomach-settling blandness and since that fateful episode around 10 years ago, this has become my go-to food for when I'm ill.
And now, whenever I've had a long day and need comfort food. THAT used to be ben and jerry's but this is way easier on the calories!

It might also be the combination with the sodium. If it was in a restaurant they have so much sodium. I usually try to drink a lot of water, sparkling and tap, so I can flush the fata nd sodium out of my body as quickly as possible.

That sounds good. I just have no plain rice, since we had pantry moths and had to pitch pretty much everything. I'll see if I have the energy to drop by the store lol.

No, it was at home. I guess 35g of fat in one meal was too much or something. Just really bummed I still have the issue even now.

I have IBS and often have an upset stomach - i find that mashed potato with a little salt (no butter!) and drinking peppermint tea help me the most - a strange combination maybe, but I am used to it!

    O_o

35g of fat in a single sitting? Mmmm yeah, there's your problem LOL. System overload. Eat bland and hydrate.

FYI: (not to be gross) But you can tell if you've had a fatty meal by your stool. Fattier stools will float so that's a way to tell if it was your fat intake that might have made you ill. Sorry for the bio visual...

Upset stomach - I drink a warm cup of white tea with pear. Wait about 20 min or so then start eating healthy again.

Yeah steak and cheese and a small piece of cake. It was half my daily fat dose. Bleh. I'll have to be more careful. I just laugh when people tell me that fat isn't the enemy now.

I've had loose stools the past few days (something to talk to my doctor about - that's something that hasn't been fixed by my new diet, so I'm probably intolerant to something), so I wouldn't be able to tell you if it floats or not LOL.

I'm having peppermint tea and more toast. Will probably OD on carbs today at this rate. Oh well.

I'll second the congee suggestion, it's really good!
