Sportline Duo 1010 HRM issues

I have had this HRM for about three months. In the last two weeks it has given me inconsistent readings or not registered my heart rate at all. Any suggestions on what the problem might be? I have a hard time believing that the batteries need to be replaced this soon.

I don't have a HRM yet (it is ordered but wont be here until early/mid next week) but in my research I have seen people say this. The best suggestion that seems to always work is to give it a good wash as the connectors may not be getting a good connection. Does the manual say anything about that?0
