Hi everyone. I need some help here. I've lost 22 pounds on my exercise bike, but just recently joined the gym. My current weight is 253 and my goal weight is 150. My goal is to lose all this fat and tone. I am looking to use the elliptical machine to burn calories
( only 30 minutes because of a bad knee).
Should I do cardio up until I reach like 200 and then do strength training and cardio? And if that is the case how many days should I do cardio and how many days should I strength train when I get my weight down? Or should I start off doing both, or is there something totally different that I should be doing? Clueless here - please help!!!

Both!
Cardio and strength compliment each other (you may also want to have a look at this excellent post: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1015100-heavy-lifting-always-the-best)
If you have a pre-existing joint issue it would be advisable to discuss your goals with a trainer and/or your physio just to make sure you don't do something to exacerbate the injury.0
