i average 5k steps a day and about 10k on higher active days. i know steps isnt the only thing determining, but i am really trying to figure out my activity level. I read 5k steps and under is considered sedentary?

Fitbit users seem to "break even" with MFP's sedentary setting around 3,000 steps.0

Per this article
1) <5000 steps.d (sedentary);
2) 5000-7499 steps.d (low active);
3) 7500-9999 steps.d (somewhat active);
4) > or =10,000-12,499 steps.d (active); and
5) > or =12,500 steps.d (highly active)

Is your tracker counting for you? I easily get 10k-15k a day and I'm on sedentary with negative calorie adjustments enabled.0

My average for the last seven days is 16,015 and I'm on sedentary.0

Not if you are tracking your activity, either manually or by linking your Fitbit to this site.
My vote is that 5000 is sedentary, whether you are going to track your exercise or not.0 -

Mine is just slightly higher than that as well...set to sedentary, negative adjustments enabled...I have to walk at least 3000 steps before i get out of the negative...0 -
For me it's around 2-2500 to hit MFP sedentary

He's lost 112 pounds! He's doing EVERYTHING right!

I was ill on Sunday and only managed 866 steps all day
Fitbit removed 266 calories from my sedentary setting
I generally log between 8-11K steps and earn an additional 350-500 calories0 -

No, it means he probably logs exercise instead of building it in to his activity.
I average 12k a day and am listed as sedentary.

ok so regardless of what i do and do not do as long as i have negative calorie enabled my fitbit will adjust... like doesnt really matter because if im under or over active it will change my goals?0 -

awesome thank you! some days i hit 2k (heavy school day) sometimes im at 10k its really random. i know on the days i do a lot of good ol fun graduate school fitbit says i only burn 1350 haha. which is pretty depressing.0 -
Sorry everyone. Didn't mean he wasn't doing weight loss correctly, I just meant that just bc he has set his mfp to sedentary and he went 16000 steps, that doesn't mean that that many steps mean sedentary, which is what this post was asking about in the first place. My bad.0

Yep
And i then just eat whatever it tells me or do i still not always eat it all back. MFP has me at 1250 and obviously fitbit will change that.. i know because MFP calories or exaggerated some dont eat it all back, but since fitbit is more accurate should i eat what it tells me to eat?0 -

I have found that my Jawbone is pretty accurate, so as long as you eat within the amount, you'll lose.0 -
I eat about 80% of my adjustment back just in case it has registered movement that it shouldn't have...which they can...but sometimes on days like today I eat them all...it's been pretty accurate tho...0

I earn around 400 calories for 10k steps. I start my day with a -60 or so, and it goes positive around 2500 steps. I generally try to be a little under my goal (50-100 calories) to allow for inaccuracies. But I'll eat them all if I'm hungry.
Keep in mind it will take some time for your Fitbit to get to know you, and you may find the adjustments go a little wonky. If you move a lot in the evening, Fitbit may report a higher burn to MFP and then lower it if you sit around or go to bed.

When in doubt go with sedentary then re-evaluate after a couple of months.0 -

Ignore your Fitbit calorie goal & follow MFP's, eating back 100% of your adjustments for several weeks. Then reevaluate your progress.
