Trying to resist doing too much . . .

Ok, folks, I'm having a hard time here. Over the past couple months, I've really upped my physical activity. I already danced several hours a couple times per week, and I added in some daily yoga, and C25K. Then, a week and a half ago, I hurt my foot. I've gone from averaging 17-25k steps a day to 4-6k in my apartment as I wait for my foot to heal.

I'm almost better now, but I've bowed out of dance classes this week, too. And I want to climb up the wall. I cannot find enough physical stuff to do right now to use up all this excess energy. I already did hatha yoga today, and hula hooped for 36 minutes, and did 30 Day Shred. I can't do anything that will require me to bend my toes too strongly (so nothing on tip-toes). What else can I do to use up this energy? Is it OK to do another exercise video?

Tomorrow is going to be worse, since it's in my calendar as a recovery/rest day.

Ugh.

If I was trying to heal an injured foot, I most definitely would not be doing 30DS.

    Why so much exercise?

Right now, my foot is basically fine--I just need to make sure not to stand on my toes for hours (which is why I am not doing tango now, because that involves putting all your weight forward on the ball of your foot and then pivoting repeatedly for several hours), or retraumatize through running. I have the go-ahead from my doctor to do whatever feels comfortable. I am trying to be conservative with my walking/dancing/running, though, because I'd rather be careful now than not be able to dance/run/walk for exercise next week, too.

I'm not sure I understand your question. Why so much exercise today? Or in general?

What does your doctor say? I would ask her rather risk long term limitations or pain.

Today, in general, both. Idk, 17-25k steps/day seems like a lot. I had over 16k steps on Saturday, but that was from unpacking a moving truck. I couldn't imagine that being the norm for me every day.

My doctor said that I could resume running/exercising/walking as soon as I no longer had any pain. I no longer have any pain for any activity except a slight discomfort if I stand on my toes. So I am good to be active, but I'm trying to be conservative in terms of exercise on the ball of my foot (ie, dancing, running, or walking my typical amount).

I live in NYC without a car, which means that my day to day life probably involves a lot more walking than most people's. On some days just running my regular errands I can make 12-15k. If you add in a bit of jogging for fitness, it is very easy to get steps in the range that I have.

However, I have been exercising more in general in the last few months because I do freelance work from home, and the amount of work comes and goes. I find that being more active helps me focus and manage my time better. And I'm happier.

That makes sense and I'm glad you're happy. I'd look into some bodyweight programs and just do the upper body portion if you're looking for something else to do today. You Are Your Own Gym is a good program and there's an app for it too.

Thank you. Do you think that bodyweight exercise rather than cardio will be effective for curbing this sense of bursting excess energy?

I mean, it's a matter of preference. I don't really like cardio; I mainly strength train and do cardio once or twice a week, but bodyweight training will definitely require a decent amount of energy.
