I will be taking my 83 year old wheelchair bound mother to The California Hotel downtown for a week in August. I called the hotel there is no fitness center. I need help working out and eating strategies while on vacation. Should I look into joining a gym for a week?

You could see if any of the local gyms have a trial membership or a weekly option. Are you going to be pushing your mother around town? That could be a workout itself.

Body weight conditioning, swimming, controlling food intake, walking, making an effort to do more than sit around the room.

When I go on a vacation and a means to exercise is not easily accessible, I generally just focus on making sure my calorie intake is controlled in a deficit (you don't need exercise to keep losing weight). At the very most, I eat at maintenance so that I won't have more weight to lose when the vaca is over. I like to research nearby places to eat before I go to see if I can find nutritional info. It helps me to have a few options already picked out for certain places so it's never too stressful trying to figure it out on the spot. It's a lot of work upfront, I guess, but it works for me.

You'll most likely do a lot of walking in Vegas. I know I did.

Yes, I will be pushing my mother around town. However, my workouts have been about 1 hour of cardio M-F and 2 hour of cardio Sat-Sun with a 1200 calorie diet.

I know I'm going to sound like one of those crazy lifter people, but do you add any sort of resistance training in? Resistance training can be very effective at increasing your BMR and helping you lose fat more efficiently. Resistance training can be as simple as doing push ups and lunges. It will also help strengthen your bones, which is important as we age.

Eat all the food, drink all the drink, get back to it after a fantabulous holiday!

Just got home from a week in Vegas. We both ate whatever & whenever we wanted. Didn't gain an ounce because we walked it all off. In fact, my husband lost a couple pounds!

Don't stress. Just enjoy your vacation! You'll be plenty active. : )

Also, adding in some bodyweight resistance in a hotel can be rather easy:

I went to Vegas for 10 days with my kids. We spent a few hours in the pool every day, we did lots of walking and I ate things that were filling as well as yummy. I did get some in-room hotel exercises done as well. I lost 3 pounds.
